    Chapter 1: Worst Case Scenario

Harsh lights made the zigzagging shadows in her dress look like deep cuts into a forbidden void. Kneeling, with her ankles bound and her arms tied up behind her, Dieu looked up across the expansive room. Gadgets, computers, machines and lockers littered the floor and walls.

She shook her head, flicking her long, black hair away from her face. She looked over at the figure standing by the long table. You won't get away with this. You won't be able to use madness as an excuse after all the people you killed.

The man turned, revealing the armour he wore. It was designed to look bulky and intimidating, possessing sharp corners and rigid, flat, faces. His pauldrons tapped against his armour as he walked toward her, like a full-stop punctuating every heavy step.

His greying hair became clearer as he approached, as did the lines in his face. He looked every bit the shell-shocked senior, despite being just shy of middle-age. She met his steely gaze with a stare of her own.

His cold eyes sent a shiver down her spine. She choked out a question, Did you hear me? I said-

The back of his hand hit her hard enough that the resulting slap echoed around the room. The sting of the strike gave way to the pain of a cut. His brutish command made her blood run cold, even as he whispered, I insist, my dear, that I will ‘get away with it’.

You must've known that you were putting yourself in so many people's crosshairs.

Dieu glared at him. What about you? What does it take to turn a man into a mass murderer? What did any of those bureaucrats do to you?

    They got in the way.

Dieu scoffed. That's it? Where did you learn to be such a violent dictator - the military? Are some sort of ex-soldier?

His eyes narrowed on her, sending a cold shiver down her spine. Yes. What of it?

Dieu leaned close enough to breath into his stern face. I saw the consequences of decisions made by monsters like you in the Chinese-Korean war. I was one of the people who had to put those poor men and women back together again after every foolish push or failed campaign.

Dieu shook her head and looked away. "You sit there and call yourself a hard-arse. You don't know anything until half your senses are dulled and useless. Until only half of you comes back to your family. I've
