CHAPTER 1
BREAK IN
"I’m bored." Karl sighed, resting his head in his hand. It had been a long morning.
Karl and his friend Sal were security guards at Benny’s Storage, located on the edge of Metropolis. It looked like a typical warehouse, tucked away within a wooded area. Karl and Sal were happy to protect the facility, though they didn’t know what was inside. No one ever came to pick up anything. They figured it was filled with a bunch of old junk that no one wanted. The outside of the building looked rundown, but the inside was a different story.
Benny’s Storage was just a cover story. The facility was owned by Project Cadmus, a secret agency dealing in super-human threats. Inside were weapons and other dangerous materials recovered from the sneakiest villains on the planet. Neither Karl nor Sal had any idea what they were really guarding.
What did you pack for lunch?
asked Sal, rummaging in his knapsack. I’ve got a peanut butter and banana sandwich.
Who cares about lunch?
asked Karl. Don’t you ever wonder what’s stored inside this place?
Nah,
Sal said, shaking his head. I don’t get paid to wonder.
Karl and Sal did get paid to make sure no one entered the dreary building. They had one other duty: never leave the checkpoint.
