About this ebook

"Out & About Town" was written in two different locations. The beginning contains poems which Jen wrote shortly before leaving her hometown of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania.

The second part, and majority of the book, was written after she became a new resident of Sellersburg, Indiana.

In "Out & About Town," Jen focuses on different questions and the aspects of her "new life."

    *Not every poem included in this book is dated in chronological order.  This is not an oversight on my part. Rather, I have made changes and substitutions over the years.

    -J.L.S.

    Still thinking about the

    Words you said—I hate

    To note their truth.

    Don’t tell me these things

    Because I know deep down,

    In my mind, that there

    Must be some changes.

    Damn my stubbornness

    For not wanting to learn;

    Damned if I must rely

    On people for the rest of my life.

    I suppose that I have to

    For the sake of any sanity

    That I happen to have left.

    Though these words sting

    Down to the hollow part of

    My bones, I know the truth,

    Even though I also know

    It could be worse.

    Things that make me hide

    Within myself; they have to

    Go out to rest one way

    Or another.

    The prospects that open

    Themselves up to me

    Will not wait, cannot wait

    Much longer.

    Surely, something makes me think

    That fear should be inherent

    In my life, but it prevents me

    From making something out

    Of myself so that I get weak

    In the knees every time a predicament

    Like this approaches; can I help it

    If my poor legs don’t hold me

    Up like they used to?

    How can I expect my dull mind

    Not to worry when I reached this

    Point in my life?

    Oh, but I could make it through

    With no help;

    I have conquered so many

    Things before.

    This life will find some way

    To see me through all obstacles

    According to God’s plan;

    Give me the courage not to fear!

    You’re here when I would

    Rather not be at this location—

    All the more reason to want

    To be somewhere else.

    I’m sure you know what I mean

    Because this is known by most

    Everybody in the world,

    Especially by a recluse,

    Who has no desire to spend her

    Free time in places just like this.

    You actually want to be here;

    I can’t imagine

    Why you wouldn’t

    Want more in this life

    Of competition.

    I want to prove more, fear less,

    Cry with tears of joy when

    I find my accomplishments

    Have caught up with my years.

    Yes, ‘tis a distant dream

    So far away from here;

    Perhaps you wanted

    The same thing.

    For yourself at one time. Do not

    Live your life in vain.

    God help me; I have to

    Get out of here soon!

    1/28/05

    I should not do this again;

    Torture my body, take away

    The very things that it needs.

    Less sleep, I’ve always needed

    More time to recharge, and it’s

    Always been hard to make sure

    I get everything I need.

    I’d best be sure to let myself

    Have it tonight, or else I’ll

    Continue to slip slowly into

    Oblivion.
