    He stands in his parka, hood up, smoking with his back pressed against a wall in a dimly lit lane. A car speeds around the corner skidding to a halt. The passenger door opens and a woman is flung out. He goes over to her and lifts her up. She’s light, emaciated, cheeks drawn in. ‘Get away from me,’ she shouts, ‘get the fuck away.’ ‘It’s all right,’ he says.
