Rehearsal goes smoothly until another setback occurs when Stephanie suffers an accident. She is rushed to the hospital where the rest of the band anxiously waits for news of her condition. Burdened with the guilt of causing her accident, Joshua waits anxiously by her side hoping she will be okay. But things heat up when Charles enters the room. A New Friendship - Kelsey MacBride

    Chapter 1

Sam forced a smile on her lips as she gathered three plates from her customer’s table and delicately balanced them like a performer in a Las Vegas stunt show. It wasn’t a feat she could do when first hired at the Seaside Café, but years of hard work at the busy restaurant had trained her to be an efficient waitress.

And even though her customers had always appreciated her fast service and cheerful attitude, none of it seemed to matter after her miserable failure at Mary’s place. Performing in the spotlight before a crowd of raving fans had always been her ultimate dream. But now, she viewed her world through a filter of grey, and the road to becoming a famous Christian singer seemed like an expedition to the top of Mt. Everest.

There was no one else to blame but herself. If Sam hadn’t been so obsessed with rehearsing for so many hours or if she had stopped pushing her voice when her throat started to feel sore, maybe she would still be living her dream as a member of Women of Grace. In addition, Sam would have worked alongside Joshua, the sexy musical director. But after her fiasco during the warm-up session, her dreams had vanished as quickly as they had appeared.

A cold shiver shot down her spine as the memory of her cracking voice tortured her consciousness like the sound of an air raid siren.

How could God allow her to embarrass herself in front of the other women?

Especially in front of Stephanie, the one person who had risked her reputation to vouch for Sam. How would her friend feel about her now?

And what about Joshua? Did he lose confidence in Sam’s abilities? What other reason would explain why he didn’t vouch for her? Instead, he meekly agreed with Mary to terminate her. While she could sense his hesitation at having to let her go, she couldn’t help wondering why he didn’t have the backbone to fight for her? Did he even try to convince Mary that all Sam needed was a little more time to let her voice rest?

But now, there was no point in driving herself crazy worrying about something she had no control over. What was done was done. God had opened a door of opportunity and shut it for some unknown reason. Was it only to tease her? Was there some lesson she needed to learn from screwing up?

Her feet felt like thirty-pound weights as she made her way back into the kitchen, where Tami was topping a stack of pancakes with a big scoop of butter.

What’s wrong with my Sammy? She gave Sam a motherly look as she tossed a garnish of parsley on top of a plate of eggs.

Sam tried to hide her disappointment and forced a smile to her lips. Nothing. I’m doing fine. But she knew her act wasn’t convincing.

"Fine? Girl, you’ve looked like death warmed over all week. I’ve only seen you smile once since your rehearsal.
