About this ebook
‘“What’s he angry about?” they used to ask. Anger is not about… It comes into the world in grief not grievance. It is mourning the unknown, the loss of what went before without you, it’s the love that another time but not this might have sprung on you, and greatest loss of all, the deprivation of what, even as a child, seemed to be irrevocably your own, your country, your birthplace, that, at least, is as tangible as death.’
Peter Whitebrook
Peter Whitebrook was born in London and has written and broadcast extensively on the theatre and literature. Based in Edinburgh for many years, he was a cultural journalist and drama critic for The Scotsman, and covered several years of the Edinburgh Festival. His co-adaptation of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath won a Fringe First Award. As a broadcaster, he has written and presented cultural documentaries for BBC Radio Scotland, Radio 4 and the World Service. He is the author of an acclaimed biography of William Archer, the theatre critic, traveller, close friend of Bernard Shaw and the first to translate Ibsen into English. He lives in Stockholm.
