    Acknowledgements

To my Grandmother, Elittie Harvey: Though you have gone on to be with the Lord, I thank you for my wonderful mother, Julia Mae Harvey. I bear your name proudly and your legacy lives through me. The strength, wisdom and encouragement that were passed down through our family made me the person I am today.

To my Mom, Julia Hartfield thank you for every lesson taught and every lesson learned. You have been the strength of our family. Your wisdom and encouragement has led me to this appointed time in my life. Never would I have dreamed of writing a book when I struggled to read growing up. But as this book will point out you never let a weakness define us or keep us from living the life God has intended.

To my dad, Roland H. Brown, Sr., who though is not mentioned a lot in the book, as a father and a man, committed to his military service, taught us discipline and respect, something you don’t see a lot of today.

To my stepfather, David W. Hartfield, Jr. (RIP), thank you for allowing us to become apart of your family. You taught me so much about business and I know you would be excited to know I am a successful entrepreneur. Without you marrying my mom we would not have the opportunity to have wonderful siblings added to our family.

To my siblings: Roland, Jr., David, III (RIP), Sharian, Yolanda, Avis, Dana, Cindy, and Marlon, I thank God for each of you. Whether we became connected through birth or marriage you have each been a blessing to me. Thank you for allowing me to practice what I’ve learned on you first.☺

Because of their impact on this book, I do have to call out just a couple of people. First: to my friend, Rev. Constance J. Jackson (Rev. CJ) who made me read the newspaper out loud for a year, to help me get over my fear of stumbling over words I could not sound out. During those early years in business your non-judgmental support and command of the English language had a tremendous impact on my ability to write this book. To my friend and Business Partner, Karen Brown, you took a chance, left your job and entered into this world of business ownership with me. I could not do what I do without you supporting me and ensuring our business operates efficiently and effectively. Together we will continue to succeed. To my Sisters Beyond the Book (SBtB) Sisters, I would have never imagined myself being in a book club for the past three years and having read more than 30 books. Even my mom is impressed.

To some very special friends who have been there for me throughout my journey, I would get in trouble if I tried to name each one of you. But I pray you know in your heart that I think you are special.

To my colleagues and employees of three of the greatest U.S. corporations: Xerox, Dun & Bradstreet and W.W. Grainger Inc., thank you for the privilege to have worked for you. There are many lessons I have learned from both good and not so good leaders. I have had the privilege of positively impacting so many individuals and the privilege of seeing many of them advance in their careers. I am sure there were mistakes I made along the way but I thank you for allowing me to work through those mistakes.

To all my Pastors and church families that God has placed me with during my journey, you were my family when I was away from family. You were my spiritual guide as I journeyed through life and you help me grow as a leader by placing me in leadership positons. I am so grateful to God for each and every one of you: Turner Chapel AME, Marietta, GA, First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, NJ, Emmanuel Baptist Church, Halifax, Nova Scotia, CA, First Baptist Church of Chesterfield, MO, St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Grand Prairie, TX, New Faith Church, Missouri City, TX, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Austin, TX and Ebenezer Baptist Church, Austin, TX.

To everyone who reads this book, I thank you!

    Team Building Mom’s Way:

    The Journey Begins

It has become a common practice for me to occasionally look back on my journey and evaluate my progress. I recognize that there have been major potholes along my life’s road that have often pushed and tempted me to stop and give up. Yet, moving forward was always my final decision and not turning
