The Early Years
June 1, 1926, the day one of America's greatest icons was born. Miss Norma Jeane Mortenson was brought into this world by Gladys Baker Mortenson. There is much speculation as to who Norma Jeane's father is. Edward Mortenson is listed on her birth certificate, but others believe it may have been a man Gladys she worked with. Norma Jeane would recall times when she would point to a picture of a man who resembled Clark Gable. Her mother would always say that was her father. As a result, she would grow up thinking that Gable was her father. Obviously, there was no proof of this or that Gladys ever actually knew him. The identity of her father is rather unimportant since neither man was in her life anyway. In fact, Norma Jeane's mother was not really in her life either. She moved through many different foster homes throughout her childhood. This was due to the fact that Gladys was very mentally unstable and unable to take care of her. Many believe that it was actually financial troubles that made Gladys send Norma Jeane away and not because of her mental instability.
At first, Gladys sent Norma Jeane to live with Ida and Wayne Bolender. They lived in Hawthorne, California. They were a very religious couple, and Gladys paid them $5 a week to take care of Norma Jeane. She stayed with the couple for a while, and has even stated that she remembered how they used to always tell her she was going to hell. She also needed to keep her dreams of singing, dancing, and entertaining from them. She knew they would never approve, because they did not want to hear any of that.
Finally, when Norma Jeane was about 7, Gladys was able to save up enough money to put a deposit down on a small bungalow that was located near the Hollywood Bowl. This would be the very first time that she would ever live with her mother. Sadly, this would not last for long. Two years later, Gladys would go into a huge depression
