    Tombstone

The woods were dark. Joseph’s head turned frantically in all directions, looking for Andrea. He followed her into the thick brush of the forest, trying to help her, but now she was gone.

Andrea! he cried out. The wind whipped up all around him.

A cluster of bushes moved just up the trail and he could hear the crackling of branches from within. His eyes darted in that direction, and without hesitation, he ran towards it. He sprinted as fast as he could, but his feet seemed to be as heavy as cement, eerily reminding him of his dream when he was a child. The movement in the brush continued as he got close.

    Andrea? he asked softly.

He crept around the tall bushes, desperately hoping to see his wife. Instead, the demon turned and faced him, arms raised, fire burning around him.

She is mine! it said to Joseph, as it laughed before spitting fire.

Joseph woke up in a sweaty panic, his nightmares of Andrea and the demon never seemed to go away. He rose up in bed and rubbed his head in frustration. The bad memories from the past haunted Joseph, no matter how hard he tried to let them go.

Joseph preferred to visit the cemetery only on sunny days. He viewed the sunlight as uplifting—the opposite of the dark of night. The darkness that brought on her nightmares.

Always My Soul ~ Always My Life ~ Always My Wife’

He stared at the headstone for the hundredth time or more since his wife died that dreadful night.

The very personal words on the headstone, a statement in dedication to their union and love.

His long coat flapped as the wind blew briskly across the cemetery, as he stood over his wife’s grave. The flowers he brought toppled over in another gust of wind. Joseph dropped to a knee and set them back in the vase. The dozen red roses, Andrea’s favorites, resumed their intended position, standing full and bright.

Joseph’s struggles in dealing with that night led to depression and thoughts of suicide. As a psychologist, he knew those things were common in people who had lost their loved ones in such an unexpected way, especially for the ones who felt responsible for their loved one’s death.

He felt he was directly responsible for his wife’s passing.

The official cause of death was a heart attack—that’s what her death certificate said, anyway. And while it may have been true medically, it was the furthest thing from the real truth.

Joseph held many regrets, and the one playing on his mind most, was his choice to use his gift in dealing with Andrea’s nightmares, something he did not totally understand. He was angry with himself and needed to find the right path . . . a path that would release him from the blame in her death.

    Visiting The Past

The cemetery wasn’t the only place Joseph anguished over his late wife. No matter how much time had passed, Joseph could never find the right place to leave the bad behind. The only stable thing throughout it all was his psychology practice, but right after Andrea’s death, he needed time off. The time off went from a month, then longer, forcing him to refer his patients to colleagues and temporarily close his practice.

This was the darkest time for Joseph, with his psychology practice on the verge of closing. He went there for seclusion and to clear his mind. In a twist of irony, the place where he helped his patients to deal with their mental anguish was the same place he found his own peace.

After all, it was only mental . . . right?

He knew better. Psychology was more than just mental games. In each case, there was always a deeper secret that held the key to unlocking his patient’s answers. He was good at his job and his business had been very successful. And with Andrea helping out, they had built a pretty good life for themselves.

When he sat in his office alone and was feeling sad, he would sit in the patient’s leather chair. The different perspective, as if he was the patient, calmed him and took the pressure off. Sitting in the dark, Joseph could clear his head and rationalize everything that had happened.

Some days were better than others, but in the end, leaving his office and walking back out into the real world always dropped the reality of being alone right on top of him. The burden he carried was heavy.

He was mad at everyone—his parents, his job, and especially his great-grandmother for passing this curse down to him.

Being at home was the worst time for him. He left most of Andrea’s belongings the way they were when she passed. He could not bring himself to get rid of any of her things.
