    Empty Girl

    S he just sits there, staring. It’s creepy, you know ?

    I watch the girl on the monitor at my station. The doctors have run their usual tests — shining a light in her eyes, taking her blood pressure, filling numerous vials with bodily fluids. I feel sorry for her, I say into the phone. Going to the doctor sucks enough. This poor kid has half-a-dozen of them all to herself.

    I hear a sigh from the other end of the line. You’re a moron. My nurse girlfriend is never one to mince words. Of course they have to run tests. Who knows how long she’s been out there, alone, or what kind of problems she might have.
