Skinner Builder in 3 Heartbeats
I feel like a seed inside a maraca as the dropship plows into Gresha's atmosphere. I've opted not to wear the goggles, so I don't see the data stream or the outside view. Instead, I prefer to stay wrapped in my warm cocoon of barbiturates. The drug is fed into my bloodstream in continuous measured doses via my subcutaneous nanopharm IV drip. The descent happens around me, rather than to me.
My name is Skinner Builder, and I am a multi-trillionaire. I am also dying, which is why I've come to this unlevel world twenty-seven light years from Earth. I come to see the Reader . . . though I suspect she's a fraud.
The drop ship lurches sideways, slamming my head against the restraints. It's enough of a jolt to spark a thrill of alarm in my sodden mind. The sniv responds by increasing my dose, and all becomes timeless numbness.
I step onto Gresha, squinting against the yellow sun that bakes the red land. A girl in white robes waves me toward a roof poking from the ground. Stairs lead into a cool, half-underground pavilion of red concrete and polished stone floors. It smells of lilacs and apple blossoms. Seven girls, all dark-eyed and with still faces, approach me. Their light robes flutter behind them as they walk in wedding-march step.
Welcome, Mr. Builder,
the last girl says. The Reader expects you.
