Luis Sepúlveda was born in Ovalle, Chile in 1949. He took a stand early on against the regime of General Pinochet (Chilean president, 1915-2006), which resulted in his imprisonment and exile. He then travelled across South America and fought against the dictatorship. In 1982, he moved to Hamburg and began working as a journalist. He rose to fame with his first novel, The Old Man Who Read Love Stories, which describes the life of the Shuar indigenous people who he had spent a year living with. A successful author, he tackled a wide range of genres, taking as his subject the historic events of the 20th century (The Name of a Bullfighter, 1994; La locura de Pinochet y otros artículos [The Madness of Pinochet and Other Articles
], 2003; La sombra de lo que fuimos [The Shadow of What We Were
], 2010) or daily life (for example, the daily life of a cynical hitman in Diario de un killer sentimental [Diary of a Sentimental Killer
], 1998).
