    Hector International Airport

    Fargo, North Dakota

    With less than an hour before our flight was scheduled to depart, we decided to have a small snack before boarding.

    Check your blood sugar, honey, I said to our youngest daughter. She was seven at the time, and had been a type one diabetic since she was two and a half.

    She opened her princess backpack.

    As I divided out snacks to our two other children--one of which was our son, who had been diagnosed with type one diabetes in August 2001--I heard our youngest say, Dad, I can’t find it.

    I looked over at her. Her bottom lip trembled and her eyes were wet. Her blood glucose meter kit, used to check her blood sugar levels, was in a pink camouflage travel bag.

    And it was this bag she could not find.

    My heart pounded hard as I searched through her entire backpack, in the desperate hope it might’ve been way on the bottom.

    It wasn’t.

    We desperately needed this kit. We were on our way to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, for three fun-filled days, and her kit was an absolute necessity. Not that we couldn’t buy one at a pharmacy as a worst case scenario, but they weren’t exactly cheap. There were other items in her travel bag too, like extra glucose meter strips, sugar tabs, juice, and a glucagon emergency kit, that were also needed.
