    Hal Tomkins shivered as the damp sea breeze penetrated his thick navy pea coat sending chills through his flabby frame. He had once had a body reminiscent of a pro athlete, but that seemed like a lifetime ago, now he a sad ghost of his former self. It was on days like this he seemed older than any forty two year old should .

    His nose wrinkled under the assault of the thick smell of rotting seaweed and dead fish that entered his mouth and nose with each ragged breath. His breathing was erratic from the exertion his having to climb over the lava rock.

    The coal black jagged rocks littered the steep beach to the shoreline where he was headed. Each step he took his feet ached due to the early onset of arthritis that was ravaging his body. An acute lack of exercise had made his five foot, seven inch frame swell, and his once wiry, vibrant red hair was now shot through with streaks of premature gray.

    I’m only forty-two, but I feel like I’m eighty, he murmured to himself under his breath.
