The Ehud Dagger - Fiona Tarr

    COG-Graphic Prologue

The dagger was finished and the craftsman wiped his hands on his leather apron as he admired his handy work. The weapon did not look like anything special, yet the Knife-smith knew it held great power. As he rotated it in the firelight cast from the forge, the blade disappeared and then reappeared like magic. He would have thought he was hallucinating if it had not been for the time when his daughter had touched the weapon, during the crafting of the dagger.

He had always known she was a gift from God and her abilities were yet to be fully developed or understood but when she had held the dagger, the hollow hilt had glowed with what looked like golden grains of sand.

The Smith had not been sure why he had even embarked on forging such an unusual weapon, but the vision of the short sword had come to him in his dreams and he had felt a sense of urgency that encouraged him to create the blade. Only time would tell what purpose the dagger would serve.

    COG-Graphic Chapter 1

‘What on earth were you thinking Jonathan? I love you, yet now I am faced with the prospect of seeing you put to death because of your disobedience.’

Jonathan waited, saying nothing. There was no defence. His father was right. He had disobeyed his father’s wishes, yet his wishes had left a bad taste in the young officer’s mouth and there were some acts a man simply could not hope to live with.

‘Have you nothing to say for yourself? You offer me nothing, nothing at all to save your head from the chopping block!’

Jonathan merely shrugged, looking at the floor at first until he slowly raised his head, calmly meeting the King’s gaze. He liked his father, he really did, yet he had lost respect for the man when he had cast his first wife, Jonathan’s mother aside. It was a bone of contention between the two of them which festered just below the surface, threatening to erupt at times such as this, so saying nothing was his best option.

The battle at Geba had been straightforward enough. Jonathan and his regiment of archers had waited above the pass to ensure no reinforcement could arrive before General Martinez’s men had secured the city. The fighting had been bloody, but short and the victory had been easily won.

Jonathan had received the order too late but even if he had not, he would have secretly refused to obey his father’s command. Now as he stood before his King he knew Saul was angry, yet he also expected that death for eating forbidden food was an overreaction that the King could not abide when it came to his own son.

Besides, the young soldier had not fed himself, or even his men. He had fed the starving citizens of Geba and for this he was sure they would honour their new King more fervently. Unfortunately, Saul did not see the situation as clearly and although he claimed it was disrespectful to disobey his orders and apparently dangerous because the food was not yet blessed by the old Prophet Samuel, Jonathan was sure it was all puff and bravado and that it would all blow over soon enough. Leaving wounded children to starve was simply something the soldier nor his General could abide.

‘You infuriate me at times Jonathan. Get out of my sight before I change my mind.’ Saul waved his hand frantically at his son.

Jonathan kept his smile hidden from his father, only allowing a grin to cross his lips as General Martinez, who stood alongside the King nodded and returned the gesture.

Jonathan always enjoyed Martinez’s company. The General was not only the best leader and commander any soldier could hope for, he was the young Prince’s uncle and Jonathan often wondered why he served Saul after the way he had been treated, but his loyalty had to be admired.

She was beautiful. Deep down he could not help but tell himself that she was too beautiful for him. Keila possessed so many qualities that reminded Jonathan of his mother. She was attractive, but not in the usual way. It was an inner strength he could not really put a finger on, yet he could feel it in his soul.

‘What are you thinking?’ Keila smiled.

‘I am trying to etch your image into my mind for when I have to go away again.’

    ‘When do you leave?’

‘Soon. The King calls, I jump.’ Jonathan smiled and shrugged his shoulders in unison.

‘Where is it this time?’ Keila’s tone conveyed her frustration. The couple had been married barely six months and in that time, Saul had sent Jonathan away for all but a few days here and there.

‘This time we are heading to send the Amalekites a message. Saul said something about the Prophet Samuel demanding that God needed him to wipe them from the face of the earth, or something to that effect.’

‘That is simply dreadful.’ Keila gave Jonathan a horrified look and shook her head. She
