"You understand that the procedure is experimental, don’t you? It’s never been tried on a live human."

Kim Lee nodded impatiently. Yeah, you told me that already, Doc. I understand the risks.

I’m not sure you do, Mr. Lee.

Maybe not, but I’m willing to try it anyway. Look, Doc, it’s not like I have anything to lose. I had thirteen fractures last year, and I’m living in constant dread of the next one. All it takes is stubbing my toe or hitting my arm against something, and then crack! — one more trip to the hospital, one more cast, one more tedious rehab. Tell me, what kind of a life is that?

    I can’t imagine.

It’s a nightmare. Of course, now I’m ultra-careful to avoid any kind of impact. But I’m sick of going through life in slow motion.

Kim suffered from an extremely rare congenital malady called Calcium Assimilation Disorder, or CAD. The first known case of it was a woman in Canada who died after sustaining 39 fractures from a simple fall. Her death was so puzzling that an extensive postmortem work-up was conducted, and she turned out to have a mutation in one of the genes for calcium assimilation — which is how the condition got its name. Since then a handful of other multiple-fracture patients have tested positive for the same mutation. The disorder remains dormant until the patients are in their 40s or 50s; then it acts up, causing their bones to thin out
