About this ebook

Everything was perfect until she announced she was pregnant…and then it wasn’t.

Married for six years, Skylar and Noah are the perfect couple. She’s CEO to a big business and he runs his own restaurant. He is tall, sexy and the most wonderful man she’s ever know, and she is beautiful, confident and is often referred to as the ‘ice queen or bitch’ at work. This doesn’t faze Skylar, she didn’t get to where she is by being nice. But one day not feeling like herself, she unexpectedly finds out she’s pregnant. Once the news is broken to Noah, shaken by his response, she suddenly realises how little she really knows him and begins to doubt their relationship.

As she tries to convince him that this might be the best thing that’s happened to them, that life is more than money and chasing career goals, the more he resists, until something strange happens. A shift within the relationship changes everything, but instead of questioning it, Skylar blindly accepts that things were meant to be. If only it was that simple!

PREGNANT

‘Oh my god.’ She burst into laughter. Not a reaction she expected, but it happened. She just couldn’t stop laughing. ‘Really?’ She covered her mouth astonished. ‘Oh god. This is…’ she had no words. She didn’t feel sad or angry, in fact she felt happy. With that thought she put her hand to her belly and rubbed it gently. ‘Is it possible? Am I even a woman?’ She giggled. The times she’d been called an ice queen made her feel as though she had no ovaries, but she knew that wasn’t true. Deep down she was a lovely person.

She flushed the toilet, cleaned up and headed back to her office.

‘You can come in now, Claire.’

Claire walked back in, but noticed that her boss was a little different. ‘Are you sure you’re okay?’

‘Sit down.’ She said.

‘Am I being fired?’

‘Oh, don’t be so dramatic. I have brought you with me everywhere.’

‘Oh, thank god.’

‘Are you serious? You know me better than that.’

‘It’s just you’re acting so strange.’

‘That’s because.’ She stalled.

‘Yes?’

‘I just found out I’m pregnant!’

‘Oh my god!’

‘I know!’

‘Are we happy or…’

‘We’re happy…I think!’

‘Oh my god. Congratulations!’

‘Thank you.’

‘Can I give you a hug?’

‘I’ll let you,’ Skylar teased.

Claire came around the desk and gave her boss and friend a hug.

‘Don’t you dare say a word to anyone. You know what they’re like about babies.’

‘I won’t. My lips are sealed. But what are you going to do?’

‘I will cross that bridge when I get there. For now, I don’t want anyone to know.’

‘Okay.’

‘And to think I had some terrible disease.’

‘Hmmm?’

‘I haven’t been myself. Noah has been telling me to go to the doctor, but I kept putting it off.’

‘What made you decided to take the test?’

‘I’ve been so busy that I didn’t notice that my period is late. It was only when I was sick in the bathroom at the client meeting did it click. That’s what prompted me.’

‘Well I am happy for you.’

    Chapter One

Claire knocked on the door and walked in. ‘They are ready for you Mrs Richardson.’

‘Thanks Claire.’ Skylar stood up, pulled on her black suit jacket and did up the button. ‘Tell me.’ She sucked in a deep breath.

‘You look great boss and you are great!’ Claire smiled.

Skylar lips turned into a wide grin. ‘Don’t you dare tell them I know how to smile.’

‘My lips are sealed boss.’ Claire laughed then left her.

Skylar turned to look out of the window to the tall building. She’d worked her butt off to finally become CEO to one of the biggest buying and selling companies in the UK. The company bought small struggling businesses, boosted them and either resold them or kept a part of it. The original owners were always given the option to stay and work with them to build the company or to take a lump sum of money and leave. There were both types in the companies they had acquired so far.

It hadn’t been an easy ride to the top. Skylar was known as the bitch. But she had to be a bitch amongst a group of bulldogs. She was first and only CEO of the company who was a woman and black. That came at an extremely high price, but she had fought her way to the top and that made her who she was today. People at the company both loved and hated her. It was hard to love someone as prickly as she was, but it was the way it had to be.

She looked out into the beautiful city that surrounded the building. She loved her office. It was luxurious, warm and private. No one could get past Claire to disturb her unless they had an appointment. To see her, meant something important was going on. She smiled like a queen admiring her kingdom. It was nice being at the top. It was power in her hands, and even though it came at a price, she loved the feeling of that power.

‘Right.’ She turned away from the beautiful city and towards the door. She was about to have a meeting with her top people who were supposed to deliver some good news as to what companies they had acquired. She would then have to present this to the shareholders. Her job came with a lot of stress and it both excited and made her nervous at the same time. She pulled on her suit jacket, picked up a folder from her desk then headed to the boardroom that was two floors down.

‘You look great!’ Claire shouted behind her as she headed for the lift.

    ‘Keep it coming.’ She smiled.

    ‘You’re doing a great job.’

Although to the outside world this may’ve seemed silly or odd, Skylar needed as much encouragement as she could get. She was like any other human being. She felt fear, but did things anyway, she felt pain, but cried in private so as not to show weakness. She felt everything every normal person felt even though her staff felt she was an ice queen. The sad part was she felt more than most, but they would never truly know. So, when Claire gave her encouragement, it did make her feel good and she did want to hear that. She needed it and Claire had been with her from the beginning, so understood it. Skylar trusted her with her life. When Skylar had risen, she had made sure Claire was with her every step of the way.

‘Love you, Claire.’ She winked and stepped into the lift.

Claire smiled knowing that Skylar would do what she did best. Cut throats.

The group waited on edge. There was good news and not so good news and when this was the case, hell broke loose.

‘I’m not up for this,’ said Wyatt to the man on his right.

‘You better be. Put your big boy pants on because if you don’t you’ll be sent to the slaughter.’

‘I know.’ Not that that helped anything.

The lift pinged opened. Dominic, her very own Pitbull was waiting for her. He was the one to do the firing and inform her of what was going on before the meeting.

    ‘Dom,’ she said.

    ‘Boss.’

‘I hope you have good news.’

    ‘Yes and no.’

She stopped and looked at him. ‘You know that’s not good enough.’

    ‘I know boss, but...’

‘No buts! What have I told you about buts!’

‘They’re for losers and the lazy.’

‘You’ve got that right, so you better get rid of that but!’

    ‘Yes of course.’

‘You’re paid good money not to give me the buts, if they’re buts what do you do.’

    ‘Get rid of them.’

‘Yes...I’m sorry I just thought you should...’

‘No, I don’t want to hear it. I don’t play favouritism and I know that the person who does well and then slacks doesn’t get any sympathy from me. I never got any of that, that’s why I am where I
