She leaves all the others standing.""Hannah Howe's writing style reminds you of the Grandmasters of private detective fiction - Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Robert B. Parker.""Sam is an endearing character. Her assessments of some of the people she encounters will make you laugh at her wicked mind. At other times, you'll cry at the pain she's suffered.""Sam is the kind of non-assuming heroine that I couldn't help but love.""Sam's Song was a wonderful find and a thoroughly engaging read. The first book in the Sam Smith mystery series, this book starts off as a winner!""Sam is an interesting and very believable character.""Gripping and believable at the same time, very well written.""Sam is a great heroine who challenges stereotypes.""Hannah Howe is a fabulous writer.""I can't wait to read the next in the series!""The Big Chill is light reading, but packs powerful messages.""This series just gets better and better.""What makes this book stand well above the rest of detective thrillers is the attention to the little details that makes everything so real.""Sam is a rounded and very real character.""Howe is an author to watch, able to change the tone from light hearted to more thoughtful, making this an easy and yet very rewarding read. Some of the colourful ways that the main character expressed herself actually made me laugh!""I loved Hannah Howe's writing style -- poignant one moment, terrifying the next, funny the next moment. I would be on the edge of my seat praying Sam wouldn't get hurt, and then she'd say a one-liner or think something funny, and I'd chuckle and catch my breath. Love it!""Sam's Song is no lightweight suspense book. Howe deals with drugs, spousal abuse, child abuse, and more. While the topics she writes about are heavy, Howe does a fantastic job of giving the reader the brutal truth while showing us there is still good in life and hope for better days to come."

Chapter One
Ann picked up the travel bag and placed it on the quilt; she’d fashioned the quilt herself, stuffing each patch with scraps before sewing them all together. She looked around the bedroom, for items to place in the travel bag. The bag belonged to her husband, Emrys. She wondered what he’d require for his journey, for his latest mission – a hairbrush, toothbrush, clean shirt, underwear, wallet. Then she paused and shook her head; no, not his wallet, regulations forbade it. Ann was never sure where Emrys went, or what he did, on these missions – he was not allowed to tell her. However, she did know that his assignments were vital to the war effort. She comforted herself with that knowledge, with the belief that Emrys’ secret missions were important, a crucial cog in the wheel that would eventually end this long, tearful, bloody war. At least she tried to comfort herself, although in reality apprehension and fear gnawed at her soul, and set her nerves on edge.
Ann glanced at Emrys’ desk. A calendar sat on the desk; it displayed the correct date, 24th March 1944. The calendar sat next to Ann and Emrys’ wedding photograph. Three months married, at Christmas, Ann could recall every detail of her wedding day. Indeed, that day glowed in her memory brighter than any other day, before or since.
Ann picked up the picture and smiled at the photograph. With his wavy fair hair and bright blue eyes, Emrys looked handsome. He looked smart too, in his RAF Flight Lieutenant’s uniform. Emrys wore that uniform as his official clothing; he’d joined the RAF when war broke out, on the 3rd September 1939, waving adieu to a highly skilled and highly paid job as an electrical engineer. Emrys was a boffin, a very clever, intelligent man. He could run intellectual rings around Ann, although he never behaved in such a fashion; at all times, in all company, he displayed his talents with reservation and modesty.
Ann looked at herself in the picture, at her shapely figure, at her blue eyes and honey-blonde hair. She smiled at her wedding dress, made from parachute silk. Strictly speaking, she’d broken the law by wearing a parachute silk wedding dress. However, thanks to Emrys’ job, the authorities had turned a blind eye.
Ann sighed. Her wedding had been a joyous occasion; despite the rationing and austerity measures, the day had lacked for nothing – Emrys’ connections and her parents, who ran the local grocer’s store, had seen to that.
A creaky floorboard captured Ann’s attention; the floorboard outside her bedroom door always creaked when Emrys set foot upon it, but it made no sound under Ann’s light tread.
All set?
Ann asked. She turned and looked at her husband.
Emrys walked into the bedroom. He embraced then kissed his wife. All set,
he said. I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.
Ann picked up the travel bag and handed it to Emrys. She said, I’ve packed everything, at least, everything I could think of.
Emrys smiled. Although he was walking off to war, he appeared at ease. He said, I’m only going for a day or two; I’ll be back soon.
I know,
Ann sighed. But I’ve included everything, just in case.
She fingered her wedding band in nervous fashion. Dare she ask the question? Yes,
