Crystal Dawn

When she’s not out hunting rogue vampires and werewolves, you can find Crystal Dawn out exploring the galaxy. She can do it all without ever leaving her computer. She kicks ass, takes names, and puts it all down for the enjoyment of her readers. At least that’s what I think she told me. Writing came as a natural outlet for her overly creative mind. She has always told stories and even written some but publishing books didn't start until 2012 with The Rebirth, was the first of the Planet Amazon books. Crystal has also been lucky to have some wonderful beta readers who keep her on track and help inspire her.Secretly, she crushes on all her sexy heroes because all her stories end happily. That is one of the things that makes writing such a joy. Knowing that it makes her reader's day a little brighter. Not that she doesn't read sad books sometimes. While still in school, she read Where the Red Fern Grows and cried like a baby. It was a wonderful book and sometimes a bit of sadness has to be put in books because that's part of life. While she reads all kinds of books at some time or another, PNR and SFR, which she writes is what she reads the most for pleasure. When she started writing, she decided on going Indie after the first two books because an author has more control. She believes Indie will compete well and continues to grow. The need to give pleasure to her readers keeps her going and she sees a long career ahead. Growing up mostly in the NW Arkansas area, it has given her a good place to set some stories and many of her characters come from there or nearby SW Missouri. The start of her stories is the easy part. Finishing them is a little harder when all the stories are in there trying to get out. She loves reading, chocolate, fine sweet wine, and traveling among a large list of pursuits. Her favorite people, after her family and close friends, are her readers who she says are some of the most wonderful people in this galaxy and the next.

    Prologue

She dropped the business card with the lipstick kiss in bright pink next to the dead body. It was what she did after she slayed a target. They would all know the kiss of death had been delivered by one of the King’s personal slayers. The idea had come to her while training and the fear the card caused kept some of the bad elements in line and some of the worst elements out of her city.

Her king liked that result and soon, he’d had the other slayers, all female of course, pick a different shade of lipstick for their own cards. It wouldn’t work for the Queen’s slayers, they were all male. Females tended to be better at this sort of thing. She had no idea why, but she was the best of the best. Maybe it was because her heart was frozen, she’d had no mother’s love to warm it.

Whatever the reason, this was her talent. She was a protector even if it meant she had to kill to do so. She was in charge, the top slayer and the one that took the hardest mission and had to kill the worst monsters. They gave out justice and sometimes killing was a mercy, because some of the biggest monsters lived with as much pain as they delivered.

    Chapter 1

    The Slayer’s Life

As soon as Alyssa woke, she felt the aches of her busy night. Once she got up and around, they would disappear. The hunt had been a hard one and she’d almost lost her prey more than once. Had it been any other target, she might have let him go for the night and looked again the next night. This one had been especially bad and needed taken out.

His prey had been preteen girls just on the cusp of womanhood. Their deaths in his hands weren’t quick or easy. He liked to play with his food. The death she’d given him had held far more mercy than he deserved. This target had also taken out a friend and fellow slayer. She’d been sure of it when she’d found Catherine’s dagger lying in the leftover ashes of his corpse. Catherine had been a solid slayer, neither the best nor the worst. It was a hard loss to deal with.

The king of the vampires expected a lot of his slayers, and they could be called to the other side at any time, as Catherine had been. They faced a horrible death at the hands of the feral and the just plain criminal every time they went out on the hunt. It wasn’t just vampires they hunted, either. Here in New Orleans, werewolves had slightly greater numbers and therefore more ferals and criminals. That might make it seem odd that the vampire king ruled here, but this was where the highest number of vampires lived.

The vampire king was king of all vampires on the North American continent and lords ruled in his name in other locations. He stayed here most of the time because the magic of the city strengthened him and any other paranormal being that lived here. Vampires never had the number the werewolves managed.

The slayers had lives away from their duties. They hid among the rich and the famous. Many were celebrities and others were in high profile positions, leaders of business. She ruled a real estate empire even though she was not yet thirty. The king started her with a small nest egg at the tender age of eighteen and she had built it into a million dollar business by the time she was twenty-one. She’d paid him back and went on to double, triple, and multiply her fortune many times over.

Business was what she would see to today, just as if her night had been spent innocently sleeping in bed. That sent her thoughts in another direction. It had been many nights since she had slept with a partner and the stress was building.

Alyssa showered, dressed, put on her face, and fixed her hair. Now she looked cool and professional. She was ready to take on the world and come out on top. Heading into her garage, she passed by her collection of motorcycles and sports cars to head to something more in keeping with her professional image.

Getting in her German coupe, she hit the garage door remote and was out and on the road in seconds. After a thirty minute drive, she pulled into the parking lot of her high rise business building. She kept the top for her business and the bottom for a gym, laundry, restaurant and other service-related businesses. The other floors were rented out as deemed appropriate.

She stepped into the empty elevator and pushed the top floor. It zipped up to the top and she stepped out, surveying her own private domain. There were fifty agents that worked for her selling properties all around the world. Her business had several attorneys and notaries, and at least half a dozen secretaries in addition to her own and her personal assistant.

Good morning, Alyssa, Tera greeted. There’s a stack of paperwork on your desk.

Thanks for nothing. I suppose it’s all papers I need to sign off on?

Of course. Otherwise, I would have handled it, Tera pointed out. She was the best
