    Chapter One

Jesse, fetch me some nails, would you? Harry Leadbetter called out loudly. Jesse, busy loading a hod with shingles for the roof, had to shade his eyes from the sun as he looked up to see where his new boss’s voice had come from.  Harry was perched precariously upon one of the rafters of the new stable block they were building for the town. An unexpected storm had ravaged many of the town’s older buildings and it had meant that the two men, the only carpenters in Faith Creek, had more work than they could manage. Along with Mayor Williams and some of the town’s most prominent citizens they had drawn up a list, and had decided which projects should be a priority. The public stables had seen its roof blown clean off, and two of its walls collapse under the barrage of wind and rain. It was a vital part of the community, where anyone could rent a mount or even a wagon or gig in time of need, and was of course where Brandon Willis kept both the stage coach and his team of horses to pull it. Not surprisingly, it had been designated amongst the most important buildings to be repaired swiftly.

Jesse made his way to the small, but neatly laid out, store of hardware they had been provided by the town to complete their task and carefully tied a small pail of nails to his belt, then lifted the laden hod and made his way swiftly up the series of ladders between the levels of makeshift scaffolding they had erected. Once on the highest platform, he laid down his burden. Harry watched as Jesse swiftly transferred the shingles from the hod into piles across the roof. You count them into bundles before you came up?

Nope, I just fit as many as I could on there, Jesse admitted with a grin. I’ve never been one for numbers. I just seem to have a knack for seeing how many are needed. He climbed carefully up the struts to where Harry sat and carefully handed the nails to him.

Thanks son, Harry said taking them and affixing them to his own belt securely. I’m impressed with your eye, I’d say you’ve got it pretty much right for this side. Now, grab your hammer and let’s get this darn building watertight. The speed you work at, we’ll have the whole roof done by nightfall!

The two men worked without a word, only the regular tapping of hammer against nail for many hours. Such companionship was rare to find, the peace of just being quiet with one another, and Jesse had been glad to find it with Harry from the moment they had met. Neither man felt the need to talk; they spoke when they needed to and kept to their thoughts the rest of the time. It was oddly soothing to not have to try and find conversation all the time and it was just one of the reasons that Jesse had chosen to stay here in Faith Creek after coming out from Fort Worth to work on the new railway station. He’d been a drifter for much of his life, had travelled all over the country, going wherever the work would take him. He had never felt the need to stay in one place before, but Faith Creek had been different. Jesse had felt accepted here in a way he had never known anywhere else, and had been surprised to know that it mattered to him that he was.

Harry was one of the finest craftsmen Jesse had ever known, and he wanted to learn as much as he could from him. He loved wood, and had always been good at making things. To be with a man who appreciated their shared profession as much as he did, maybe even more, was a privilege he might even had paid good money for. Thankfully Harry was as generous with sharing the money they earned fairly as he was with his compliments, and so Jesse was more than content. Not only that, but Harry was one of the kindest men too, and had made a place in his heart as well as his business for Jesse. For the first time in his life, Jesse finally felt part of a family and he never wanted to give that up ever again. It had made him hungry to change his ways, to think about maybe one day having a wife and children of his own and he knew that always moving on would never suit such a life.

As the light began to fade Harry looked up. "Time
