Truth Wrapped in Lies - E. A. Hargrave

I have heard from many people that Organic doesn't mean Organic and it's just marketing for people naïve enough to believe that it is healthy and safer. There is some truth to their words. However, the word organic is fast becoming a marketing movement with companies making claims of organic without any certifying body backing them. Even the largest GMO manufacturers and biotech company such as Monsanto is taking advantage of the organic movement. In a strange way, this makes perfect sense, the public finds out what is hiding in their food; they stop buying nonorganic and showing the food industry what they think with their dollars.

Companies that have contracts with the biotech industry flood the market with food labeled organic that has GMO’s in them. Then they lead people to believe that organic is the same as GMO’s as they buy up all of the organic producers one by one. The next phase would be to change the organic labeling laws from within the USDA and FDA themselves, while paying for the corruption of government agencies to recoup the profits from the people escaping GMO’s and seeking out healthy foods for themselves and their family. In Disguised in Deception, we look at what organic really means, what might surprise you is that slowly the same government bodies that are in place to protect you and our organic food supply are being turned into GMO advocates.

    What is Certified Organic?

Section 205.301 of the USDA Organic Program clearly lays out the requirements for organic labeling, and marketing information of consumer’s packages is only based on how much organic ingredients are in the product. The percentage that is calculated must be of actual weight or by fluid volume (not including water or salt) of the organic ingredients.

    Here are categories of organic:

    100% organic

    95% or more

    70-90%, 70% and less organic

Producers that are labeled 100% organic are only to contain only organic ingredients and food processing should only be organically produced

If a product is 95% organic, it must have no more than 5% of nonagricultural ingredients, if the ingredients are not found in the organic form that falls under Section 205.201 nonorganic guidelines. Some nonorganic item that is available in organic used in small amounts such as spices must not be produced using GMO methods sewage sludge, or ionizing radiation, pesticides/herbicides. Organic products that are 70-90% organic are used in similar fashion as the 95% organically, can use pesticides/herbicides, sewage sludge, irradiation, and GMO is not allowed. Produced, 5-30% organic products can use pesticides can contain everything from pesticides/herbicides, sewage sludge, irradiation, and GMOs.

The public would believe that certified organic ingredients are safer, and with the right information on the product and company they are, the FDA and USDA policies takeover by corporate heads are allowing GMO’s and other poisons in 30% products. Under 70% organic is a little safer but not by far, Organic is becoming BIG BUSINESS, the FDA is slowly becoming corrupted by corporate money. Organic is no longer organic the moment it is mixed with nonorganic ingredients; even organic ingredients do not mean safe! In my last book Disguised in Deception we looked at different kinds of sweeteners and the dangers they may have, Neotame is included in many certified organic products and many times without being labelled. The USDA doesn’t require the labelling of Neotame because they classify it as a flavor enhancer.

The FDA has even posted on their website that Neotame was not safe. However, it was approved for use in July 2002 by the FDA. Another common name given to Neotame is Sweets; NutraSweet has been using Sweets in cattle feed. Organic livestock feeding procedures are similar to human guidelines as stated in product composition. (d) Products with less than 70 percent organically produced ingredients.

The question we must ask is, do we want our cattle to be consuming food that was made with a neurotoxin? How will it affect the animals that eat it? And just how will eating these animals affect us? As millions of consumers are hoping the fight for GMO labelling would come to an end, there seems no apparent end in sight, heavy government, and corporate involvement have thwarted efforts to force GMO’s on the label.

Even though many states in the US have taken matters into their own hands, buying organic is still the best option for those who are wanting to keep them and their families safe. In my last book Discussed in Deception we looked at the USDA organic seal and what it represents, we will look a little further in what the different labels are telling you.

I’m sure that you have seen these labels on food packaging at some point, but do they mean?

These labels are the most commonly used label in the US; it means the food you are buying is processed and produced by the USDA regulations, and it is 95% or more organic. If the product is 100% organic, it will label 100% Organic; some may have another labeling along with the USDA seal.

The Made with Organic Ingredients label, means that the products contain at least 70% organic ingredients. You will not see the regular organic seal on products that have certified organic ingredients label. Some might have other art than the one shown but mean the same. You can avoid GMO by looking for the Non-GMO Project Verified that have gone through a third-party certification process. All products that contain the USDA labeling are prohibited in using genetic engineering (GMOs), sewage sludge, and ionizing radiation, according to the USDA.

Voluntary Labels Verified- Some products will voluntarily label food packages. However, the USDA inspect them for their truthfulness according to its website.

Free range- everyone has seen free range eggs what this label is telling us is the birds were allowed to have access to the outdoors anytime they want. However, this often means the birds are often provided with their feed and are not always pasture-raised.

Cage-free- Some people think that free range and cage free are the same, but they are not the same. This means that the birds can roam freely in their shelter with unlimited water and food. Once again, this term only means they can roam freely in their large cage and might still be fed GMO (if the label doesn’t say organic), here are some photos of cage free chickens.

Natural- In my last book Disguised in Deception we talked about the meaning of natural, all this means is that the animal products are made with minimally processed and contain no artificial ingredients. Natural labels only apply to products that are made using some form of meat including poultry; they have no standards or regulation for their labels. There are no requirements for use of the natural label, GMO’s and other harmful chemicals such as hormones/antibiotics might still be present in these products.

Grass-fed, By definition means the animals are fed mostly grass, in some cases even organic grass-fed cattle can on occasion be fed grains (some labels say 100% grass fed, these are mostly from small producers). Caution should be used when purchasing products that are Grass-fed that are not organic; this does not limit the use of antibiotics, hormones or pesticides unless stated otherwise.

Pasture-raised- As of now there is no current definition by the USDA for pasture-raised on the USDA website.

Humane- There is no USDA definition administered for this term.

No added hormones or raised without hormones. The federal regulations have never allowed hormones or steroids in poultry, pork, or goats, the USDA as stated on their website. However, this term is used for all another form of cattle. Have you ever heard the saying knowledge is power? It is important that consumers take an active role in understanding the products that they are buying. Many organic companies have good ethics and farming methods for staying GMO-free.

Organic brands that are owned by a major corporation like Walmart, General Mills, Kellogg’s, and so on might not be as trustworthy because some of them have direct ties to the GMO biotech industry. Keep an eye out for supposed natural products that don’t contain meat; the term natural is not regulated as organic. Many companies claim their products are natural; lawsuits have been filed against companies that use GMOs in non-animal foods; this is including the Naked Juice company. No matter what it is you are buying always look for the USDA Organic certified seal, back of the packaging there it will list who the ‘certifying body’ was, Oregon Tilth is one of most well-known and respected.

    Chapter 2

    PLU Codes

The PLU code is a bar code that's started in the 1990's; they are they little sticker on your fruits and veggies. They are not just used to ring up your food; they can tell you a lot about the food your about to buy. PLU codes tell you where it was grown, the methods that were used to grow it, and how many crops yields in that group. PLU codes are usually four digits, if you are trying to be healthy and learn what is in your food, the PLU code is an excellent way to learn about your produce. Here are some tricks that are helpful in trying to find out which produce is conventionally grown (GMO), organically grown, GM.

How to Read the PLU Codes?

PLU Codes that start with an 8 and have five digits are GMO.

PLU codes that start with a 9 and have five digits is

    organically grown.

PLU Codes that start with a 6 and have five digits are irradiated and are mostly imported.

PLU codes that start with a 4 or are four digits are

    conventionally grown (GMO).

    Example:

A conventionally grown banana would be 4011

An organically grown banana would be 95011

A GMO grown banana would be 85011

An irradiated grown banana would be 65011

There is no law in the United States that requires the labeling of GMO crops, and as such, there are many companies that label them as conventionally grown. Some produce that should be bought as 100% organic are:

Corn (approx. 88% of U.S. crop in 2011)

Papaya (most of the Hawaiian crop; approximately 988 acres)

Soy (approx. 94% of U.S. crop in 2011)

Sugar (approx. 95% of U.S. crop in 2010)

Zucchini and Yellow Summer Squash (approx. 25,000 acres)

So far, I have not been able to find a good and working PLU reader app for any mobile device.

    Chapter 3

    Conventionally Grown

In my last book Disguised in Deception, I talked about the difference between GMO and organic; we even talked about the difference between natural and organic. There is some controversy about conventionally grown foods; some people think that conventional means traditional, in fact, it means conforming or adhering to accepted standards. But what does that mean, accepted standards are a wide range, there is a certain amount of pesticide/herbicide residue except in food, even though the standards are there and accepted by the government that does not mean that it is healthy or even safe.

Here are some of the more common reasons why organic is better than conventionally grown. Safety, fruits and vegetables with the organic seal are grown without chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The livestock raised in organic farms are not given hormones/antibiotics, the living condition are more suited to the animal, unlike CAFO farms. The environment. It is known that the toxins from pesticides and herbicides are reaching the drinking water from runoff, the dangers of changing the DNA of both plant and animal species are still unknown on how it will affect the ecosystem. Organic is the only sustainable form of farming that has been done from the beginning of life on the planet. More nutrition, peer reviewed studies conducted on the nutritional value of both organic and conventionally grown foods, have shown that organic yields more nutrients than that of the conventionally grown counterpart. Antibiotic resistance, the overuse of antibiotics in farming is leading to bacteria that can resist antibiotics. Foodborne diseases such as bird flu can be traced back to a farm that has poor living conditions.

It’s my belief that the longer we as human’s overuse antibiotics, the sicker we will become with little hope of combating diseases, we will be creating more powerful drugs that bacteria and viruses will adapt to and become less effective, this is a vicious cycle. The difference from traditionally grown and organic foods are that conventionally grown foods can use synthetic chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics, hormones) or genetically modified organisms. A study conducted by Stanford researchers about how organic and conventionally grown foods are different, their conclusion came from analyzing 237 of organic foods including organic produce, meats, and dairy. Their findings shown organic foods are more nutritional than the conventionally grown foods. Some scientific studies suggest that the lack of pesticides and herbicides used on organic crops allow for a more nutritious soil, this, in turn, yields more nutrients in organically grown foods.

A study in 2010 by Washington State University found that organic strawberries have more vitamin C and antioxidants than conventional strawberries. The difference is not just in strawberries, tomatoes have a very healthy antioxidant called polyphenols, this antioxidant can help you repair damaged cells helping you age slower, organic tomatoes have more polyphenols than commercially grown tomatoes. There are some things to take into consideration when talking about the nutritional value of food, some things to consider is how ripe the food is will impact how much nutrients are in the food. If you compared the nutrients of a conventionally grown apple that is at its peak ripeness that had pesticide used on it vs. an under ripe organic apple. The conventionally grown apple will contain more nutrients in it versus the premature organic apple.

Healthiness of meats and dairy, organic milk has less omega-6 fatty acids, which have been linked to heart conditions, and 79 percent higher levels of healthy omega-3 fatty acids compared to, those in conventional milk. So, in conclusion, organic does not contain synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics, hormones or genetically modified organisms, if the food is of the same ripeness as the conventional foods organic does, in fact, have more nutritional value. The environmental impact from organic farms are far less than other farming methods and are the only sustainable agricultural method. If organic
