*Not every poem included in this book is dated in chronological order. This is not an oversight on my part. Rather, I have made some changes and substitutions.

I am no longer
The firm figure
Who once stood
Before the world
And proclaimed
All her life's ambitions.
Once solid and
Hard to scoop
Into place; I stood
My ground – was
Set in my beliefs.
Still cool, but not
With the same
Confidence as I
Had before the
Sun’s rays started
To do their damage,
Feeding on my
Weakness because
Ponce de Leon's
Discoveries did
Not come to assist me.
Now, I am seeping
Through the cracks;
All my substance
Leaked out of me
Because the protective
Shell was the first to go,
Leaving me most vulnerable.
Sugar melting, as
I am becoming the
Shrieking violet
That I am known
As today.

If I could close my eyes,
Sweet springtime dreams
With my face pressed on
The glass – the brown of my hair,
Turned golden late afternoon.
How can one not marvel
At God’s beauty –
The sweetness of
Green leaves and the
Fairest sky of blue.
I wish that I could stay
Here all day – in the peaceful
Throes of serenity, where
Every foe will leave me be!

Welcome to the artist that is me;
Welcome to my river of dreams,
Where we can drink freely;
‘Ere there was not a drop
