    The Mortician - Mordecai Taylor

The scalpels sparkled mischievously on the table. They were pristine, sterile, and directly to the point. Wyatt’s fingers grasped one of them firmly. The coldness of the metal kissed his fingertips through the layer of latex. He hated the gloves, but they were required. The scalpel whispered through the first layer of skin, ready to share the secrets that John Doe had taken to the grave.

Making first incision on John Doe, male, appears to be between the ages of thirty and forty-five. Subject’s abdomen is distended. The tape recorder whirred quietly on the table as he spoke.

His scalpel found the groove from the first pass and fit snugly, slicing through the next layers of skin. The skin opened. A fog like gas wisped up from the abdomen. The putrid smell of partially digested and rotting food mixed with the stark antiseptic scent of the room.

Well that’s new. There appears to have been a buildup of some sort of gas in the subject’s abdominal cavity. The gas was foggy white in color and appears to have no odor of its own. It dissipated quickly upon breaching the skin. Wyatt spread the opening wider to get a better look, John Doe’s stomach seems to have been ruptured, which appears to be the most likely cause of death here.

Wyatt continued the examination and concluded the autopsy before sewing John Doe back up and prepping the body for transport to the funeral home. Let’s see here. Wyatt picked up a clipboard laying on the table, According to the body release, you’re going to Ginseng Funeral Home. He draped a sheet over the body and unlocked the wheels on the table the subject was on. The white van was parked out back. Small hallways left little room to maneuver, but loading bodies to transport was second nature
