      Zenaida, Mary, and Tamika stop beating the crap out of us. This is the first time for Patty Gee. I’ve been down this street before. That’s how it is in Jersey City. She’s a good girl, a Jesus freak, white, and never gets in trouble. But Zenny wanted to kick her ass for stealing her bubble-butt skater man even though he’s not with either of them anymore. Patty just got sucked into the same shit that depresses me about living here. I didn’t have to get punched in the face and kicked in the stomach and ass and back. I could have walked my Dominican butt past the parking lot of Saint Joe’s and continued on down Pavonia Avenue and let Patty deal with the game she was unfortunately given. But Patty’s my friend. Zenny was my friend. Shit, we were almost stepsisters. That was a long time ago and will never happen now.

      The girls leave us on the asphalt of the empty church parking lot. Patty lies on her side and covers her bloody face. Her body jolts like she’s sobbing. I spit some blood out and notice that my tooth is loose. The three girls are just about to turn onto Pavonia when Zenny stops her fat ass in skinny jeans and glances my way. Maybe my brain is just a bit mixed up but I think I see something in her face. Not happiness.
