    Novembro - Ian K Pickup

    The Not Yets!

Do you know what we are going to do to you? a male voice asked.

Shut up. You’re not real, Collette whispered as she made her way home through the busy town centre.

Are you scared of us? Because you should be, said a female voice.

Shut up, Collette snapped as she waited for the lights at a zebra crossing to change. Talking to herself meant she got some funny looks off other people around her, but it wouldn’t be the first time. She had suffered years of problems with mental health and battled on through them, but this year was different.

What had started as one voice had now turned into four individuals, two men and two women, and over the months, they had become more and more consistent, either taking turns or—worst of all—the whole group talking at the same time.

Collette was so scared of them now that even when she attended sessions with her psychiatrist, when she was asked if she was ready to talk about them, she always replied, Not yet. Her life was being made sheer hell.

Back in her flat, one of nine in a converted detached three-storey Victorian house, she stared into the mirror.

I look terrible. My face is aging so rapidly… It’s December next month, and I don’t think I can face Christmas.

One of the ways she tried to combat the voices for a short time was to listen to music fairly loudly through headphones, which seemed to keep the group quiet—or drown them out—but she couldn’t go around wearing them permanently.

Trying to sleep at night was bad, and high doses of sleeping tablets were not the answer. She had tried channelling only positive thoughts through her mind, but the group always found ways in and took over.

Over the years, Collette had lost most of her friends. One or two would ring up now and again, but they never visited or even offer to go out for a drink. Even her parents had little to do with her, and she was their only daughter.

Collette’s flat was on the top floor at the end of the hallway. Her neighbour, Steve, was a nice enough person but, like nearly everyone else, he would only say hello if they met and avoided getting into a conversation; basically, he kept his distance.

His girlfriend, who stayed over sometimes, would always ask, as soon as she arrived, Is that mad woman still living in the flat next door? Have the men in white jackets not been to take her away? I don’t think it’s right, those types mixing with ordinary people like us.

It always caused an argument; Steve didn’t think that way, and although he had very little to do with his neighbour, he never felt threatened in any way. He just felt awkward if he bumped into her.

Collette was washing up after a meal when the battery of her MP3 player went flat. Straight away, a voice interrupted her. People are waiting. They’re going to torture you. Shall I tell you how?

"Go away and leave me alone! I have told you time and time again, you’re not real and
