About this ebook

Halloween 2017's greatest short story! Katrina Hammermill winds up in the spirit world, trapped in the pumpkin patch kingdom of Pumpkinia. She is quickly taken in by Pomprin, the pumpkin princess. Katrina's true memories are now hidden away in the deadbooks of the spirit world, and the only sensible thing to do is go back to the human world and pull tricks on those who do not leave treats. But what will happen on the next Halloween, when Pomprin and Katrina walk among the living once more?

    The Pumpkin Princess

Oh, leave me alone! Somebody, make them stop!

That's how Katrina's Halloween was going. The drizzling rain stung her face with cold. The soggy tail of her costume whipped at her legs as she ran through the bushes and emerged in full flight onto the bumpy fields of Farmer Wesker's farm. Ron and Chera, the McCleady twins, and their older brother, Kyle, laughed mirthfully as Katrina fled. Chera's cackle was the worst, and coordinated well with her witch costume. Perfect fit. Katrina rubbed the sensitive wound on her hip as she high-tailed it along. They were firing at her with an air rifle! How insensitive.

Those stupid McCleady kids! They'd jumped Katrina and her brother, Clive, while they were out trick-or-treating. Ron and Chera, of the wonderfully degenerate, bullying type, suddenly decided their grade-school sadism would work just as well outside the schoolyard this Hallow's Eve. They were much more interested in chasing Katrina than her little brother, so Katrina left Clive in the corn stalks and led the McCleady kids in the opposite direction.

It was just an air rifle. Katrina should probably turn around and slug that blonde whack-job right on the chin, but she was scared that her brothers wouldn't respect the rules of womanly combat and stay out of things. Chivalry is usually out the window once someone opens fire.

So much for Halloween, then. Huffing and puffing, lungs burning, back of her throat going cold, Katrina blinked away the hot tears and grit her teeth, trying to will her legs to move faster. Forget the bullying. She was really ticked off. Already her kitty booties were full of mud, and so were the legs of her fluffy, puffy cat costume. She'd made it herself, from the ears on the hood to the long, dangling tail. Now one of the paws was missing, she was wet and cold, and burned a little in her gut with a desire to really roast the McCleadys. Stupid, stupid McCleadys! Especially the twins! Their evil knew no rest, even on this sacred day of dress-up, this favorite holiday of Katrina Hammermill!

Old Man Wesker had a big 'ole willow tree in his pumpkin patch. The McCleady – why not say it like it is? – gang would probably chase her to the barn and then give up, not wanting to bring down the farmer's wrath. If they caught her at the barn, she'd be at their mercy. They might pelt her with pellets or push her down in the hay, or equally sinister things! And they'd ruin her costume even more. They wouldn't find her if she hid in the pumpkin patch, behind the willow. Rather, so close to Farmer Wesker's house, they wouldn't give chase. He still had the lights on. He'd send the McCleady kids packing.
