Introduction
Events in Catalonia are moving almost too fast to keep up with. We've seen independence referendums, state repression, Spanish direct rule and fresh elections in the region. It seems that every day brings a new development.
It can feel almost impossible to stay abreast of what's going on there. The sheer amount of information coming out of the region can be overwhelming. While the media does an excellent job of reporting on developments as they happen, by its very nature that reporting is rooted in immediacy. That can lead to context and nuance being missed, with the day to day events taking precedence instead.
This short book then, aims to provide a wider overview of the Catalan issue. It will not only look at the most recent events, important though those are, but will also aim to provide some historical and political context for what's going on. As well as that, it will briefly look at the reaction of EU politicians to developments and the reasons for that.
It's important to understand that even this long-form piece can still only scratch the surface of what's happening. Interested readers are encouraged to use
