    Chapter One

Matthew Carrington stood in the middle of the street, gazing at the growing crowd of townsfolk heading his way. He smiled to himself. Welcome, one and all, he cried, flinging his arms wide and bowing to the crowd of people moving his way with dramatic flair. The performance is about to begin, and you won't wish to miss a moment of the mystery, magic and mayhem you are about to behold. Follow me to a world of wonder!

He beckoned them onwards, breaking into a pronounced trot to maintain his position in front of them all. As they rounded the corner he heard them gasp, and then chatter amongst themselves at the sight of the arena he and his company of traveling players had created. The small stage erected on a patch of level ground just outside the town itself, the twinkling of hundreds of lamps, though the sun was yet to go down, and the bales of straw, covered with clean blankets and dotted with comfortable cushions for the audience to sit upon. Matthew grinned at the pretty young woman waiting in the ticket booth at the entrance to the arena, and directed the crowd her way. He stood and watched as she took their coins and began to find their way to their chosen seats then hurried to the wagon he used as his dressing room.

Matthew? Jared Mortimer, who would be playing Troilus in tonight’s performance, poked his head around the flimsy curtain Matthew had rigged up at the back of the wagon, to preserve his privacy, just as he had removed his shirt. Hayley is unwell. She has been vomiting all afternoon. She is not going to be able to go on as Cressida.

Damnation! Matthew said loudly. He knew he should be worried for Hayley’s wellbeing above the success of the play, but it was so close to curtain-up that any such concerns were a nightmare. Winnie will have to go on.

Ah, that might be difficult as Winnie went home to see her family today as we are only a day’s ride from Fort Worth. You gave her permission to go, remember, Jared said as Matthew remembered that he had indeed done so. A traveling troupe of players, their lives were spent on the road, he had felt it was unkind to not allow Winnie the chance to see her family when they were so close by.

Is there anyone else who knows the part?

Well, we all do – but everyone is needed in their own roles.

We have about half an hour until that crowd out there starts to get anxious. We have until then to find a solution, Matthew said running his hands through his curly dark hair and then rubbing his face hard. I will find a solution. We cannot and will not disappoint these good people. The show will go on. Jared gave him a wan look. Go and get yourself ready, Matthew said. If I have to play the part myself I will. His finest actor giggled.

Sorry boss, but I’d rather not have to kiss you on stage or anywhere else, and I doubt the costume would fit, he said and disappeared into his wagon to put on his greasepaint and costume.

Matthew pulled his shirt back on and leapt out of the wagon. He hurried across the front of the stage to where Mayor Williams was chatting jovially to an older gentleman and his finely dressed wife. Ah, now you really should meet this young man, the mayor said slapping Matthew on the back as he halted next to them. Matthew Carrington, actor, director and genuine Shakespeare scholar - this is Albert King and his lovely wife, Moira.

Delighted to meet you both, Matthew said shaking hands with the kindly looking couple.

Likewise, Moira King said. I love Shakespeare. Always wanted to be an actress when I was younger, but being a nurse suits me better I think. Mayor Williams and her husband nodded their agreement.

It is a shame you did not keep up your ambitions, Matthew said wryly. "I find myself an actress short this evening. It is why I came to see you. Do you think there might be anybody in the town who might know the part of Cressida? Or any of the parts for women in the play in truth? I can switch around my own actresses if I
