Prologue
The stillness of the air seemed to suck even the sound of her footfalls into the nothingness of the temple grounds. The leaves didn't crunch under her feet. They made no sound at all. Even the trees did not rustle as if they were tense with nerves for what was to come. It was creepy, but eerie was closer to it. Dark clouds cast a shadow over the lands, threatening to wreak havoc on De'Mar. It was no ordinary storm that was brewing. Cora knew that. She was a royal after all, and she knew all too well the job the gods had entrusted upon them. However that was all lies. Now the gods were angry, she had done the unthinkable. She had betrayed them. It was not her intension, but nevertheless that is what she had done. But she knew that she would do it again. She would do anything that she needed to stop them. The god's could never get their hands on what they had been promised. It all made sense to Cora now. Everything that she had learned over the years. All the crippled warnings. She was the keeper and she would stay that way. No one would come between her and the special gift she held.
She held her head high. She should have trusted her heart. But even if she did, she would have been punished as no one expected the fate that would unfold. All she could do now was face her people. The very people she had failed. Looking up, the sky crackled with lightening followed by a thunderous bang. She sent a silent prayer of forgiveness not to the god's but her mother and father. Not only for her, but her daughter. The god's were coming. The sky was opening. Cora just hoped that her punishment would be given before they arrived. Death would set her free. She smiled up at the sky. She would never let the gods have what they wanted.
Cold seeped into Cora's bare feet as she waited patiently clung to her young daughter's hand. The witches of the realm had gathered. Some looking on in horror, while others wore a smile of satisfaction. Many had said she would fail. Cora had always been too carefree. Sheltered by her mother, who had believed that no child should shoulder responsibility, they should be children and nothing more. So Cora lived a life of fun, running wild and being free. That all ended with her mother's death. Cora had to grow up over night. She had to play her part, the next in line for the throne. Her ordinary life was shattered.
Cora, Queen of De'Mar. You have been found guilty of not only treason but adultery. You are to be exiled from this land. Never to return again!
Her husband's words rattled inside her head as her heart sank. So that was her fate, it was worse than death. To be thrown from the only world she knew and loved. She prayed for death, to end her suffering. The portal to the otherworld had only ever been used once. By her father's brother, who had gone in search of a rare flower to save his wife and sons life. Only, he never returned. There were rumors that the other world was deadly. Monsters roamed and ruled the land. Not even their magic could save them from the evil there. Others say the other world is called earth. Everything there is natural. Never been touched by magic.
Anyone who wishes to still serve the queen will also be exiled,
the rest of what he said became a blur just a murmur in the background as Cora tried to make sense of her situation.
Chapter 1
Three years ago....
Cora sighed as her maid Jeanette finished dressing her for her wedding. Marriage isn't a ring worn, or a paper signed. It is not something endured but savored. It is the union of two hearts beating as one, each that would make sacrifices for the other's happiness and wellbeing. Marriage is something so beautiful that in the natural
