About this ebook

When Becky the mail order bride arrives in Rocky Point, Seth is struck by her near total resemblance to his late wife. He’s preoccupied with why his children don’t care much for their new caregiver, and prays they will soon come to adore her as much as he’s beginning to. What is he going to do if they don’t? Will they continue to be rebellious, or will she be able to turn the situation around? Should he allow himself to fall for her, or should he hold back to honor the memory of his late wife?

    Chapter One

The anticipation coursing through her body was all the impetus she needed. She couldn’t wait to get home and open the letter from her sister. Rebecca Whitfield knew her mother had been much too tense lately, and supposed it was because she wanted to know if Sarah was well and happy.

It seemed they’d all been wondering about the young woman who had gone to Montana to meet a horse rancher. Did she arrive safely? What was he like? Was he good to her? Would she marry him, or come back home sad and rejected?

Although no one anticipated her return, the possibility was there. But hope—along with full trust in the Lord—seemed to keep them all optimistic.

Now she was bringing home the news, and felt certain she, her parents, and her youngest sister, Savannah, would feel enormous relief. No matter what the report was, at least they would all know.

Only one thing made her curious, however. Why had Sarah addressed the letter to her instead of their mother? Yes, it was a minor thing, but she couldn’t keep herself from wondering.

Bursting through the door, she called out. Mother, come to the parlor! I have a letter from Sarah! The joy and excitement that came through was sure to bring her family to the room with haste.

Within seconds, Mother stood in the room with her, Savannah not far behind.

What does it say, Becky? It was apparent Mother was curious and hopeful, but Becky thought she heard a bit of nervousness, too.

I haven’t opened it yet. I wanted to wait and read it to you. She smiled, glancing back and forth at the other two women.

That’s very nice of you, dear.

Yes, nice. Now open it, for Heaven’s sake. Savannah seemed almost too excited.

Waiting until they all were seated, Becky carefully broke the seal and removed the letter.

    My Dearest Sister Becky,

I am writing to you because I know how much you enjoy sharing news with everyone. I can imagine you reading this aloud to Mother and Savannah, who are listening intently. Oh, how I miss all of you! But this letter brings with it some wonderful news.

When I first arrived, Carson greeted me so kindly, and he is so very handsome, I felt my heart would be safe with him. Please let Mother know I was correct about him. I believe he loves me more than life itself, and I must say I feel the same for him.

Carson is a very generous man. He gave me a horse of my very own. Oh, Becky, I wish you could see her. She’s a tawny mare, and I named her Saffron. She seems to love me as much as I do her, and I know she understands what I tell her. I don’t believe I’ve ever known such an intelligent horse.

I am pleased to tell you all that I am now Mrs. Carson Prentiss. We both knew it was the proper thing to do, and it seemed unnatural to wait any longer when the Lord had brought us together. I apologize for not writing sooner to announce this. I knew everyone would want to be here for the wedding, but it came so quickly the letter simply would not have arrived to you in time.

Now I would like to tell you why I’ve sent this letter to you, specifically. You may wish to read it in silence and decide afterward if you want to share it with the others.

Becky glanced up at her mother and sister. Both women wore identical expressions of curiosity and confusion.

Mother leaned toward Savannah. I wonder what secrets those two are sharing. It was good to see a grin appear on her face.

I’d wager it’s about a man. Her sister sounded conspiratorial.

She wasn’t going to be outdone by these two. I’ll let you know immediately after I read it, if you would be so kind as to allow me a few minutes.

A shared titter came from them, and Becky couldn’t help the slight shaking of her head. She turned her attention back to the letter, and read the remainder of the second page in silence.

During my time here in Rocky Point, I’ve had the
