Matriarch, Part 1 - Michel Weatherall

    ...And Tears Flowed in Oceans

    Y’ha-Nthlei,

    East of Devil’s Reef

    1928

We had waited centuries for this day in breathless anticipation. It should have been a glorious day, an unprecedented day, a day we would never forget... as we never would.

Our species’ great mother was to grace our magnificent city with her presence. Mother-Hydra, the progenitor of our species. It was a sacred ritual. The worship, the adoration of our Goddess!

Mother-Hydra: the first woman. The first mother. The oldest of our species. Ancient beyond measure, Her genesis behind prehistory. Consort to Father Dagon.

As the Ocean birthed all life, Mother-Hydra birthed our species, the Deep-Ones. The rightful descendants of a Pre-fall Adam and Eve, before Death entered their DNA. The rightful heirs to this World!

Gloriously beautiful, the epitome of feminine fertility, Mother-Hydra was a giant, dwarfing all other Deep-Ones. Even among the oldest, even surrounded by the purest bloods, the largest of the Ancient Matriarch-Behemoths were tiny as they crowded around Her.

We were ecstatic in the awe of her presence. Intoxicated by Her Grandeur. Maybe that was why nobody noticed.

The surface-dwellers, those degenerate apes, dropped depth-charges. Nobody noticed until it was too late.

The initial concussion blasts stunned the monstrous amphibious Ancient Matriarchs, their collective bodies trapping Mother-Hydra, encasing Her in a living tomb. There would be no escape for our Goddess. Her fate was sealed as further depth-charges fell upon our Glorious submarine city of Y’ha-Nthlei.

The surface-dwellers didn’t know. How could they? Degenerate land-dwelling mutants, their very genes permanently tainted by Death. It was the most unfortunate coincidence of events, but the most disastrous for my people.

Few of us escaped. Even fewer survived. But of those of us that did, tears flowed in oceans.

A new Mother-Hydra will arise. The oldest and most powerful of the Matriarchs will ascend to take Her place. Our Father’s most favourite will receive the Kiss of Dagon.

    We live in an ocean
