About this ebook
Take a look at the sky on a starry night and find the middle star in the constellation of Orion. Right behind it, a small and cosy planet hovers, hidden. Amazing creatures live on that planet. They’re called hipposnails. They have bodies like hippos, but on their heads they have horns like those of a snail.
The first book in the Hipposnails series — Ai's Adventures — tells of a fantastic world inhabited by amazing creatures, and of the adventures of the main character — little hipposnail Ai. He lives in a small seaside town with his Mum and Dad. Ai meets mysterious animals — some dangerous, others kind — and occasionally even tames them. He travels, flies on dragons, finds new friends, quarrels and makes peace with them like all children, and most importantly he overcomes his fears and helps his friends.

Ai's Adventures - Kate Savushkina
1. A Friend from the Forest
One day, his mother gave Ai a round basket and sent him to the forest to pick sweet berries for jam. Ai had filled up about half of his basket when he got distracted by a nest of winged multicolouries he found in the hollow of an old tree. As soon as he stretched out his paw towards them, they flew away in all directions like a firework display. Nearby, someone small and very angry rustled in the dry leaves. Ai had accidentally stepped on its burrow. He really wanted to find the animal and apologise, but it ran away.
Ai returned to his basket, but there were almost no berries left in it. He looked around for the thief. Two curious eyes perched on stalks appeared from the grass. Wow, it was a snail!
In town, Ai often saw heavyweight carrier snails. They are very strong and so large you can ride them. These snails carry a whole lot of things: mail, carts with vegetables and hay, even logs! Compared to them, this snail was very small, it didn’t even reach Ai’s waist. Its shell was bright green, just like the grass. The snail crawled unashamedly straight up to Ai and stared at him as if asking, Are there any more treats?
Shoo!
said Ai and swung a burdock leaf at it. That’s enough for you, I won’t give you anything else.
Ai found a new bush and started quickly picking berries, but the snail kept on following him. Ai could have wandered in the woods all day long, but today he wanted to be back early. Neighbours were talking about terrible night creatures flying over the outskirts of the town and frightening the hipposnails. This made Ai feel somewhat uncomfortable.
Ai came out of the forest dragging a full basket of berries and headed for the town. The green snail was crawling along. He was walking quite slowly, but for the snail this speed was like running at full speed. Look how many delicious sweet berries you have,
the snail was as if saying. Can’t you really spare at least one?
You really can’t talk,
said Ai out loud, took a handful of berries out of the basket and handed them to the snail. It bumped into his paw with its soft, cool muzzle and ate everything in one go. Ai thought that the little one had never tasted such berries, it could not reach the. It must have been feeding on fallen leaves and bits of bitter bark.
I'm sorry, but you can’t come with me,
he said sadly and stroked the snail on the head.
The previous week, Ai caught a fat blue buzzer-flyer in the meadow and brought it back home in a sack. As soon as he let it out, it turned over all of Mum’s seedling pots and flew away breaking through the window glass on its way. As punishment, Ai had to weed the veg patches all day, and now he was strictly forbidden from bringing home any living creatures.
They came onto the street where Ai lived. On either side of it there are round houses with peaked roofs. The windows are all of different shapes: round, square, triangular. Some houses have their entrance door on the second floor with staircases leading up to them. The chimney could easily be sticking out somewhere on the side. Each house has a large garden and vegetable patch. Hipposnails believe that the most delicious vegetables and fruits are the ones you grow yourself.
Ai flung the gate open and walked into his garden. He sniffed the air. It smelled of flowers, freshly mown grass, and the honey cake Mum had put to cool down on the window...
Suddenly he heard a quiet puffing behind him. The snail was right there. It liked it very much there, too. Without further adue it went to inspect the veg patch behind the house.
Hey, where are you going?
Ai called, but the snail had already disappeared into a bush of scentaromiums. Ai heaved a deep sigh and went inside, straight into the kitchen.
Well, thank you!
said Mum delighted with the berries.
I found something else in the forest,
Ai said guiltily.
What?
asked Dad as he sat glancing at the honey pie cooling down.
It’s there, in the garden...
The snail was proudly sitting on the biggest and most beautiful cabbage head. But then, it was no longer so big nor so beautiful. In five minutes, the snail had chewed up half the cabbage head.
Mum clutched her head, her horns wilting. Dad looked at Mum and shouted, What a mess! Ai, take this creepy animal back to the forest immediately!
The snail crawled very quickly towards Ai and leaned on him. Ai stroked it and looked at his mother pleadingly.
Oh please! It’s useful; it will grow up and carry a cart for us...
It’s not a carrier snail, it’s a wild forest snail,
said Dad sternly. It won’t grow and is only good for spoiling our crops! To the forest!
Forget about the forest. It’s time for dinner. We won’t get the cabbage back,
sighed Mum. We’ll keep the snail in a seedbox and feed it some leftovers.
They dined in the garden and watched the sun disappear behind the horizon. The sky turned dark pink, and then purple
