Michel Weatherall is a native of Ottawa, has lived in Europe and Germany and travelled extensively. With over 30 years in the print/publishing industry, self-publishing was a natural step to his company, Broken Keys Publishing. He has published 6 novels and 2 collections of poetry. Balance Sheet
"Currencies, cash-money, abstract electronic funds. All said and done, there is only so much money in the world. Never more. Never less. It changes hands, repeatedly, but its grand sum never changes – even when we consider its growth via interest. It is all accountable. All traceable. Really, the world’s economy is a simple balance sheet.
"Sure, the numbers we are dealing with are in the multiple trillions, and these numbers mutate and fluctuate in the millions and billions by the second. But at the end of the day, it is all math. Complicated math, but math all the same.
"I can see it. I can see it all. I can process it all. I can follow it all. The answer is always the same. Zero.
"There are isolated moments when its sum slightly deviates from zero. But this can be traced to acts of war or illegal criminal activity. Money hidden for a set period of time – briefly pulled out of the ebb and flow of the world’s economy. It always returns. It is always found.
"There is only so much money in the world. Its ledger sheet always balances out.
"The discovery of lost artifacts or priceless works of art can effect and affect this grand zero-sum. Several caches of Nazi-hidden treasure caused a brief
