Deadly Secrets The Fight for Love (Billionaire Shape-Shifter Romance Series Book 3) - Alice Jamison

    Chapter One

Charles lay on the ground, surrounded by thick green foliage. The sounds of the night echoed in the darkness. The trees swayed gently in the soft tropical breeze; and the plants and leaves on the ground rustled as critters passed over them. The crash of the ocean could be heard hitting against the rocks nearby. With his enhanced hearing, Charles could hear the receding footsteps of the man who had wounded him and kidnapped Elsa. He wondered where the man was taking her. It was a small island, so it could not be anywhere too far. Pain rippled through his body like a tidal wave. He tried to breath; but each breath he took brought on a fresh wave of pain. He let out a low groan, clenching his jaw. Thoughts of Elsa and his need to get to her; to rescue her from the clutches of that mad man was all that kept him struggling and holding to life. He was getting closer and closer to slipping into the darkness. No. He refused to succumb to it. He had to save Elsa. He had to get his love back into his arms. Images of her vivid auburn hair and innocent brown eyes flashed through his mind. Memories of the times they had shared in the few days they have been on the cruise ship and this island played across his mind.

His lips curved into a faint smile. He was so weak from blood loss that it took great effort just to lift the corners of his mouth into the smile. His hand flew to the wound on the left side of his abdomen. It was a good thing that the man who had shot him had poor aim. The silver bullet had missed his heart by a mile. But, silver was lethal to his kind; and the bullet near his side was still doing serious damage. It weakened him immensely. Despite his accelerated healing, his wound was not going to heal with the silver bullet still lodged inside his flesh. If it was not a silver bullet, his body would have pushed it out and begin to heal itself already. But that was not about to happen. He needed to get the bullet out somehow.

He pulled his hand away from his wound; it came away soaked with blood. He mustered all the strength he could and pulled himself to slump against the trunk of a tree. Just then, he heard soft footsteps in the distance. He stiffened; damn it. He was not in any condition to take on a threat right then. If it was one of his enemies; they could easily overpower and kill him. Charles grunted, he wondered if it was the same mad man that had put the bullet in him. Maybe he was coming to finish off the job he had started.

Charles released a string of curses in to the silence. He swung his head around weakly. He had to conceal himself and hope that whoever was approaching would not detect his presence. He spotted a thick cluster of bushes a few feet away. He sighed, wondering if he could make the distance. He had to try. He used his hand to pull himself across to the bushes. He collapsed onto his back. It was hopeless, he was much too weak and his remaining strength was quickly dwindling. He stopped moving and stared up at the night sky. The moon shone brightly and the stars twinkled. His breathing slowed ad his eyes fluttered downward. He felt like he could not hold on any long. I’m so sorry, Elsa. His heart fluttered, he had failed her. He had failed to protect her and he would fail now, to rescue from the hands of a mad man. There was no telling what he would do to her; what she would suffer at his hands.

The foliage parted and someone emerged. Charles caught a whiff of the person’s scent. Victor? The man rushed toward him. Charles opened his eyes. Victor loomed over him, concern written across his features. Charles grinned slightly, Victor, I will be damned. You are still alive.

Victor cocked an eyebrow, Of course I am; which is more than I can say for you. You look like you are knocking on death’s door, my friend.

Charles snorted rudely, Friend? Since when are we friends?

You had better be more polite. As I see it, I am the one standing between you and certain death right now.

    Charles chuckled, Alright then, friend.

Victor shot him a sardonic smile. I’m going to have to dig that bullet out of you.

Charles shrugged, Go ahead, and have at it. He steeled himself in preparation for the agony that was about to ensue. Victor knelt beside him and assisted Charles into a flat, supine position. He wasted no time reaching his finger into the small bullet hole. Charles grunted in pain and ground his teeth in an effort not to shout out in an expression of his pain. Damn it, Victor. Take it easy will you?"

Hush up, you big baby. He swirled his finger around. Ah, I’ve got it, he said as his finger touched the small piece of metal. He slowly pulled it out of the tiny hole that had been made in Charles’s abdomen.

Charles groaned, Why do I get the feeling that you enjoyed that way too much?

Victor grinned wickedly, No comment. He held the silver bullet between his thumb and index finger, studying it. How can such a tiny thing do us so much damage? He flicked the bullet away as if it had burned his fingers. Well, you can go ahead and heal yourself now.

Charles studied Victor intently. He had been unsure about trusting the man before; but it seemed as though he could. If the man was truly an enemy, he could have easily killed Charles in his weakened, vulnerable state. Thank you, Victor. I guess I owe you one.

Victor nodded, No, I would say we are even. After all, you have been protecting Elsa this whole time. Charles sighed. Elsa, Victor’s goddaughter and the love of his life; just the sound of her name kicked his pulse into overdrive. He had to get her back.

Charles glanced at Victor guiltily, "I did
