Thinking to Survive
The main aspect of becoming a successful spy is having the ability to successfully get your mind into the proper mindset to function in a variety of stressful situations.
Learning to Manage Stressful Situations
Let’s take a moment to think about what separates those that survive and those that become victims of disasters and dangerous situations. Survivors tend to have these aspects on their side, along with a possible stroke of luck:
Ability to hone in on the task at hand
Not stressed by having to think outside-the-box
Understand clearly what needs to be done
Can respond quickly
Having a survival mindset in your back pocket will not only make actions much easier to do, but will reduce effects of crisis, such as shock, panic, and fatigue. Those that immediately have the mindset that they are going to die or get hurt are less likely to take logical action and rely on pre-programmed
responses rather than taking action as a scenario unfolds. This means they are more likely to become emotionally and mentally stressed, leaving them incapable of surviving.
Survival is all about keeping your ego in check, managing emotions, and controlling your fears. Spies of all kinds put themselves in the face of danger on a regular basis and must be prepared to cultivate the proper mindset to survive. This means going beyond having just good equipment to battle hardships. This section will provide what you will need to develop a healthy mindset that will increase your chances of withstanding both short and long-term crisis.
Overcoming Fear
The response you have to stressful situations greatly determines how you overcome the challenges that you are presented with. The key to survival is learning how to control your fears. In many folks exposed to crisis, they find themselves frozen where they stand, unable to take action. In others, fear provokes our natural flight-or-fight
response, which can cause one to make wrong and tragic decisions because they jump to conclusions too quickly. For those that are fortunate enough to be able to survive situations and take a look back to an unfortunate event, they are able to clearly see what fears held them back and robbed them of their common sense.
Here are some tips to get control over fear:
Analyze what makes you afraid. When you know your fears inside and out, you can learn how to train yourself to get the confidence you need to face those fears head-on in crisis.
If you choose to fear your fears, you are only giving in to what weakens you, making you far more vulnerable. If you take the time to evaluate your fears, you will see what makes you scared and conquer it head on.
Ego has no place in stressful scenarios.
