Christmas 364 - Claude Jennings
Christmas
Introduction - Oh If We Could Only See Such Spirit Through The Year
For many, Christmas is a special and magical time of the year where families gather, fireplaces are lit, icicles hang from windows and inflatable Santas sit in front yards. Shoppers rush to department stores and spend countless hours trying to find the perfect gifts for their loved ones. There’s nothing more exciting than seeing a little boy’s face when he gets that brand-new bike he asked for on his Christmas wish list, or the joyous screams from a little girl when she unwraps the doll her mother caught her eyeing in the aisle of a toy store.
Teens record these magical moments on the latest gadgets they received for Christmas as the grown folks converse while holiday music provides the perfect background noise. Christmas is indeed a special time. Even complete strangers are quick to offer a smile and a Merry Christmas
or Happy Holidays.
It is definitely the season of giving mixed with pure happiness. Heck, you may even feel tempted and act on giving that not so favorite co-worker a coffee mug just to spread holiday cheer. The Christmas season exposes the better side of people.
Kindness and joy seems to be common among many unlike any other time of the year. Added to the happy feelings surrounding the Christmas season, there’s a feeling of hope. An article in the New York Times featured in a December 2012 issue cited data collected from 20,000 people on what time of the year makes them the happiest. Christmas Day, though not celebrated by everyone, was voted as the happiest day of the year by a significant margin. There’s an optimism that seems to fuel the joy of the season. Brenda considers Christmas The Season of Miracles,
a time where you can receive everything you wish, material and intangible. A genuine belief that struggles and hard times won’t last forever, things can get better and if they don’t, you can still enjoy and be thankful for the little things.
With the giddiness the Christmas spirit brings, my co-author Brenda and I have always wanted to prolong the feeling. All the joy and love that surrounds the season leaves us and others wondering; Why can’t life be this way all year long? Shouldn’t the same form of kindness, smiles, giving and hope repeat itself daily? Wouldn’t life be grand if we had that internal feeling of chestnuts roasting on an open fire every day of the year?
Christmas is such a powerful, loving and wonderful time of the year that it should affect us, change us and cause some sort of action. It would actually be quite useless and a waste of a great season if all Christmas did was make us feel great for a few days and then once the feelings wore off, it’s back to life as normal until next year.
Brenda and I are both Christmas fanatics and we believe we have the magic potion to put the world under our Christmas spell! Well, at least encourage everyone to share the love, joy and hope of the season all year long.
Just to take some of the crazy
out of this idea, we are not talking about having Christmas Trees up in March or buying tons of presents for everyone every month. No need to go caroling in June or worry about high electric bills in September because you have the house lit up all year. The all year Christmas we are talking about has nothing to do with the music, decorations, parties or presents. It’s a desire to see the Christmas spirit alive and at work all year. How can we see the love, giving, sharing, kindness and happiness of Christmas all year?
This book is not an instruction manual giving you detailed, day to day instructions on exactly what to do to make every day Christmas. Instead, this book provides ideas and suggestions that are meant to be put into action whenever, wherever and however you can. Take this Christmas 364 journey with us. Read through the pages, explore your own thoughts and see if these two Christmas Crazies
