Foreword
By Toni Oloko
I first met
David France in 2014 at an MIT networking event full of engineering PhDs. Given our lack of technical experience, neither of us had any business being there. I hid in the corner gorging on free snacks, observing David from afar, wondering how a black music teacher with an inner-city orchestra could captivate an Asian aquaponics professor with poor English. We struck up a conversation after the event, during which his genuine love of people became evident. To this day, he remains the best people-person I have ever met. That night I received the following email:
I was a high school student at the time with dreams of starting a company, and he possessed what I most desired: the ability to instantaneously connect with people at the most fundamental level of being.
I responded by asking to meet for coffee. He agreed. Just a few sips in, he said, I want to help you.
Within 45 minutes, he taught me how to connect with anyone, how to send a cold email, how to stay on the top of people’s mind, and how to network. Life moves faster around David. We have been close friends ever since.
Using the skills I learned, I went on to build and sell a company, raise venture capital, and have spoken around the country — all before turning 20. My people skills are what I get complimented on the most, all of which I wholly owe to David.
To be honest, I was a bit sad when I discovered David would be sharing his secrets with the world. But after reading this book, I now see how the world will be made richer by anyone who puts these ideas into practice. I have no doubt that everyone holding this book can take advantage of these tools. In this life-changing book, David illustrates what it means to be a giver rather
