About this ebook

This book is a clean Cozy Mystery short story that does not contain any foul language, sexual situations, witches, or paranormal events.

While celebrating the new windfall of her very expensive Hanoverian gelding, Rufus, the old barn cat, showed up sick.  Holly then realized that she hadn't chosen a vet for the animals.  One of her employees suggested that she use the local Veterinarian in Hill City.

Since Rufus was not showing any improvement after seeing the vet, Holly made a follow up appointment to have him checked out again.  Upon their arrival she found the doctor dead.

Was the Veterinarian's death a result of natural causes or could it have been murder?

Kill Them With Kindness - Eve Craig

    Chapter One

Holly wiped off the thin film of barn dust that had settled over the screen of her laptop in less than an hour. I think we can make it. The lessons are still going strong, even though the weather is turning colder. I was worried that the smaller kids wouldn’t want to keep riding if they were getting a little chilly.

They’re tougher than you think. McKenzie, her dark hair in a long braid down her back, sat in the chair across from her with her legs crisscrossed underneath her. She reached forward to snag another doughnut out of the box on the table. I know the weather has never stopped me. Snow, rain, even thunder. Okay, ice will stop me.

Holly laughed. You’re a true horsewoman, that’s for sure. I just hope that everyone else has the same kind of commitment that you do. We’re doing okay, but we’re not fluid enough for me to think I’ll never need to worry about rent again.

Speaking of finances, what are you going to do with King? McKenzie wiped a drop of jelly off her lip and raised an eyebrow.

I don’t know, Holly replied with a sigh. I know I could get a lot of money for him. He’s well-bred, and I think someone in the show circuit would be delighted to have him.

    But?

Well… King—also known by his show name of His Royal Highness—had been given to Holly after the death of his owner. She hadn’t expected such a thing, and had even tried to say no, but in the end King stayed at Happy Hollow Stables. He was a gorgeous Hanoverian, and Holly had found herself growing more and more attached to the dark bay as she took care of him. She enjoyed the way he whickered softly at her when she arrived with his grain and the way he wrapped his neck around her for a hug. He was much more personable than his former owner had been.

I’m not saying you have to sell him, McKenzie clarified. I just know that you haven’t really made any solid decisions about him, at least none that I’ve been privy to.

Holly looked up at her assistant over her laptop. Have you ridden him yet?

    McKenzie grinned. So smooth.

Like butter on four legs. And he’s so eager to please! It only takes the smallest touch of a heel or the tiniest tug of the reins to cue him. I don’t think I’ve ever ridden a horse quite that nice. I know it would be good for the stable if I had all that extra cash, but I’m also having a hard time imagining him going to someone else.

Then just keep him. Ride him. It’s not as though any normal person would ever be able to afford a horse like that, anyway. Maybe you could enter a few shows for yourself.

Quirking up her mouth, Holly thought about that. She had been so focused on opening and resurrecting the stable that she hadn’t considered getting back into shows. After all, they had just finished hosting their first one for Happy Hollow. Maybe. And I could have him as my backup plan. If things get bad, I can sell him then.
