Gordon R. Newell (1913-1991) was a prolific American author of histories. He also ran for mayor of Seattle in 1960, but was defeated in a runoff election by incumbent Gordon Clinton. Newell wrote or co-wrote more than 20 books about Northwest history. He died in Seattle on February 18, 1991, aged 78.

FOREWORD
This fifth in the Superior series of maritime picture books is the first to sail deep-water
beyond the regional confines of the coastal and inland waters of the Pacific Coast.
As in previous books of the series, there are a number of things this volume does not attempt to do. It does not pretend to cover all the many hundreds of passenger carrying steam and motor ships which have sailed the world’s considerably more than seven seas since the turn of the century. Being designed for the general reader, it does not contain the mass of facts, figures and statistical material dear to the heart of the dedicated maritime enthusiast. And, finally, it does not claim to be infallible. The writer has been taken to task on previous occasions by scholarly maritime publications whose reviewers are not in agreement with my theory that books entirely without errors take so long to get written that they seldom get printed. While a reasonable effort toward accuracy has been made, I will not beat my head against the wall in anguish if somebody confronts me with the awful fact that the S.S. Tokumoto Maru was really launched in 1910 rather than 1911 and carried 659 passengers rather than 650.
There are in print several reference books about ocean liners of a comprehensiveness and accuracy almost superhuman. If they say the Tokumoto Maru was launched in 1910 rather than 1911 we’ll concede in advance, they are doubtless right and we are wrong; 1910 it was.
What this book does try to do is impart a bit of the glamor, the majesty and the color of the most exciting things ever built by man...the Ocean Liners.
Representative ships of the world’s major liner routes are covered in picture and text, along with reproductions of what antique book fanciers call ephemera
...menues from the salons, posters, sailing schedules, deck plans and souvenir programs. Brief histories of most of the major shipping companies presently operating passenger liners are included. And there’s a salting of assorted sea yarns thrown in because I like them and hope my readers will.
If this book leaves the reader with a memory of a lean, rakish Schnelldampfer of the old German Lloyd rolling down the North Atlantic road with the coal smoke pouring from her four tall stacks, or of the great Queen Mary flinging her majestic challenge to all the air and sea forces of her country’s enemies, or the poignant notes of a sailors’ hymn as the requiem at the awesome death of Titanic off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, then it has served its purpose.
Much of the background material for this book was provided over the years by Ralph E. Cropley whose lifetime of deep devotion to ships and the sea ended in 1960. With a friend named Franklin Roosevelt, he was known to skip classes at Harvard to watch the ships come in at East Boston. Later he abandoned a banking career to ship out as purser on the old President Arthur in 1920. Retired as chief purser on Atlantic liners, he came to the West Coast to do his bit in the Korean emergency, his last service at sea being aboard the Marine Phoenix. He was then well past sixty-five. His many memorials include the Cropley maritime historical collection at the Smithsonian Institute and the International Model Collection at the Seamen’s Church Institute, New York, where he was assistant curator and historian during the last five years of his life.
His last wish, that his ashes be scattered at sea in the Gulf Stream, was carried out by the master of the Peninsula & Occidental Liner Florida, one of Doc
Cropley’s favorite ships.
A bit of his sea lore lives on in this book, as it does, from Coast to Coast, wherever memories of ships and sailormen are cherished.
Finally let it be said, for every great and gallant ship whose story has been told here, there are a hundred that have been left out. I hope to write about some of them in another book of this series. If you find that your favorite ocean liner has been neglected, please let me hear from you. We’ll try to find mooring-space for her in the next book of ships.

CHAPTER ONE—BLUE RIBAND
The Blue Riband of the Atlantic, the British call it. To Americans it’s the Blue Ribbon, to the French, Ruban Bleu, to the Germans Blau Band. Whatever you call it, it’s the symbol of the ultimate royalty of the sisterhood of the sea...the great racing liners of the North Atlantic. And in whatever language the phrase is spoken, it is one to stir the imagination of those who love ships and the sea.
The pride of the great maritime nations is involved in the winning of the Blue Riband. Fortunes have been invested, won and lost, and famous steamship lines have been created and destroyed in the battle for the pennant which can be flown only by the fastest passenger liner in the world.
During the first half of the nineteenth century the trans-Atlantic speed records were held by British and American steamships built of wood and driven by paddle-wheels. The fastest of them, the Collins Liner Adriatic, could maintain a sea speed of 13½ knots.
The second half of the nineteenth century was an era of transition on the sea-road of the trans-Atlantic racing liners. Single-screw iron ships like Cunard’s Scotia of 1862, White Star’s Britannic of 1874 and the Guion Liner Oregon of 1883 kept pushing the speed of the Riband Winners to eighteen knots and more.
With the coming of the Inman Line’s City of Paris, first of the steel-hulled, twin-screw express liners, in 1889, the winning speed jumped above twenty knots. From then until the closing years of the century, the Blue Riband of the Atlantic was virtually monopolized by the British lines; Teutonic, White Star Line, averaged 20.35 knots to make the crossing in five days, 16 hours and 31 minutes in August, 1891. Cunard’s Campania averaged 21.12 knots on her fastest crossing, in June of 1893. Her sister, Lucania, upped the average to an even 22 knots in May of 1895, holding the Blue Riband for more than two years.
Germany, emerging as a major maritime power, had yet to give serious competition to the racing liners of the British and American companies, but the German lines had been quietly improving their ships and service while the Cunard, Inman and White Star lines were getting the headlines with their Riband-winning racers. In 1897 Germany served notice that she was entering the competition. The ships they built to make good their boast were classic models of the North Atlantic’s most colorful epoch.

GERMANY’S BID: THE IMPERIAL FAMILY
With the coming of the twin-screw steamship and the consequent abandonment of auxiliary sails, the ocean liners of the late nineteenth century had lost their remaining family resemblance to the windjammers.{1} The Atlantic greyhounds of the 1890’s had the basic appearance of today’s ships. Passenger accommodations had moved out of the ship’s hull into a superstructure above decks. The smooth, unbroken hull lines of the early steam packets were a thing of the past, but the big steamships of the 90’s had only two or three decks above the hull. This gave them a somewhat lower, racier appearance than that of today’s big ships with their towering, hotel-like superstructures. It also made them safer and better sea boats.
With their lean, slim hulls, low superstructures, and tall, raked funnels, these ships looked like ocean grey-hounds, and it was in their era that the term was first used. It was at this period...the close of the nineteenth century...that the two great German lines, North German Lloyd and Hamburg-American, made their bid for supremacy on the Atlantic. The result was a quartette of marvelously swift and beautiful ships; the crowning shipbuilding achievement of the century.
