Chapter One
M.J., wake up.
Sister Mary Jo Brunetto, startled from sleep, blinked against the blinding glow of her bedside lamp. What? What’s wrong?
Sister Gabriel stood with the bottom of her nightgown stuffed into a pair of sweatpants, making her look like a lumpy Weeble. She had pulled a ruffled fuschia polyester blouse over the top of the flannel gown. The lights are on in the church.
M.J. rubbed her eyes and yawned. So? It’s probably Father Riley.
I don’t think so. It’s almost three a.m.
It’s the middle of the night.
Yes. That’s why we have to go and check. It could be a burglary.
Sitting on the edge of her bed, M.J. shook her head. Oh, no we don’t. If someone’s there, it won’t be smart to go busting in on them. Did you call the rectory?
Yes. No one answers. I know Father Riley’s hard of hearing, but the phone rang at least ten times before going to voicemail. Something’s wrong. I can feel it in my bones.
M.J. rolled her eyes. You always say that and we both know the only thing in your bones is arthritis.
The older nun planted herself firmly in front of the door. Well, I’m going to investigate. If I’m not back in fifteen minutes, call the police.
She turned and padded down the hall.
M.J. groaned. Oh, God, help me.
Lifting her eyes upward, she added, That’s a prayer.
She pulled on a pair of jeans and a bulky sweatshirt that would hide the fact that she was braless. If she let Gabby go off on her own and something happened, she’d never forgive herself. Neither would their superior.
By the time M.J. reached the back door that faced the school, parking lot and, off to the right, the church and rectory, Gabby was already striding across the lot. Darn, she’s fast for a senior citizen.
At seventy-eight, Sister Gabriel had fought against retiring. That was probably the only battle she’d ever lost. M.J. eased the convent door closed behind her and hurried to catch up. Wait a minute,
she hissed.
Gabby slowed. I brought the key. Let’s go through the back door behind the sacristy. The lights aren’t on there. We can surprise them.
Oh, good, because I was hoping we’d do that. Then what?
Then we…well….
M.J. took the key from Gabby’s hand and slid it into the lock, easing the door open as quietly as possible. We slip inside very quietly and, if we see someone in there, we slip back out just as quietly and I call the police,
she whispered, holding up her cell phone.
Fine, come on.
Gabby pushed past her and into the darkened space.
M.J. reached out and grabbed
