About this ebook
Christmas is rapidly approaching and the parishioner who typically plays Santa Claus for the St. Malachi’s Christmas party is sidelined with pneumonia. When a homeless man takes shelter in the school two nights before Christmas, Sister Gabriel gets an idea—something that always concerns the other nuns. The man, who introduces himself as Mike Ryan, is willing to help. That is, until he finds out he has to be fingerprinted. He’s a veteran and claims no criminal history. So why is he reluctant about a background check? One of the nuns is in for a Christmas surprise.

Chapter One
Sister Gabriel Schmidtzer gazed out her bedroom window at the untouched blanket of snow on the parking lot of Saint Malachi’s. Stars sparkled in an indigo sky. A plume of smoke rose from the chimney on the rectory across the parking lot. All was quiet. The song Silent Night played in her head. She closed her eyes. Gabby loved Christmas. It had been her favorite holiday since childhood. Now, at seventy-eight, she still felt that excited child stir when she heard Christmas carols, saw the manger set up in the church sanctuary, and helped drape lights over the convent tree.
The children’s Christmas concert earlier that day had brought tears to Gabby’s eyes as she remembered her own childhood Christmases and the years she’d helped prepare children for their concert as a teacher and principal. She looked forward to the party on Christmas Eve in the school cafeteria. They had yet to find a replacement Santa Claus since Ed McKenzie was sidelined by pneumonia. Gabby offered to don the suit and play the role, but the other nuns agreed she was simply too short—and female. She reminded them of the discrimination women in the church had fought against for years. She was convinced the only requirement for Santa was to be jolly. She could be jolly. Sometimes.
The small Catholic grade school, rectory, church, and convent created a square around the parking lot atop a slight knoll. Main Street and National Boulevard paralleled and the convent faced Jefferson Avenue. When she opened her eyes, she could have sworn she saw a light flicker briefly in one of the basement windows in the school. She blinked and stared. Nothing more. I guess it’s time to get those cataracts checked again. As she turned away from the window, a sound forced her around. It sounded a bit like an animal. A wounded animal. Now she was awake.
Gabby wrapped in her plush velvet bathrobe—a gift last Christmas from her grand niece—and slid her feet into
