Deadly Secrets Escape (Billionaire Shape-Shifter Romance Series Book 7) - Alice Jamison

When consciousness began to lift the fog in Elsa’s brain, she struggled to recall where she was and what had happened. She opened her eyes and looked around. Her head was too heavy to lift, although she tried. She felt movement and slowly realized that she was in a moving vehicle. She searched until her eyes landed on the driver. Adam. How did she get in a car with Adam? Where was he taking her? Where was Charles? Where were the children? And Victor?

Flashes of memory began to come back:  They were running as wolves, and then they changed back into human form and got dressed. Then Charles collapsed. There was a dart in his chest...Adam! It was all beginning to come back to her. Adam had drugged Charles and taken her. He must have drugged her, too.

If she stayed quiet, perhaps Adam wouldn’t sense that she was awake. She lay deathly still, willing herself to not panic. She needed to be focused so she could either fight or flee. Adam had the radio on in the car, blaring some hideous noise that she supposed passed for music. Hopefully, that would suppress his senses until she could get her wits about her and plan her next move.

She had no idea where Adam was taking her, but she supposed he would take her to his home, wherever that was. She could just make out the side of his face from her position in the back seat of the car. He had an evil grin on his face, and one hand was tapping to the rhythm of the music on his steering wheel.

Without turning her head, she rolled her eyes to see if she recognized anything out the window. She didn’t. They were on a rural road with no houses in sight. An occasional car passed them going the other direction, but traffic was very light.

The thought occurred to her that maybe she could spring on him, jerk the steering wheel and make the car crash. That might give her time to run, or if the crash rendered Adam unconscious, she would finish him off.

Don’t even think about it, Elsa, Adam’s voice warned.

He had apparently tuned into her thoughts and knew what she was thinking.

Think about what? Elsa asked innocently, slurring her words to make him think she was groggier than she really was.

About trying to make the car wreck, he said.

I must have been dreaming, she said, I don’t want to be in a car wreck. I might get hurt.

Yes, you might, you little she-wolf, Adam said, And I don’t want anything to happen to you until I have had my fill of you.

That will never happen, Elsa said defiantly. I will kill you before I allow you degrade me!

So, my brother, he said the word as if it left a putrid taste in his mouth, my brother can ravish you to his heart’s content and it’s fine, but if I show my desire for you it’s degrading? I’ll show you degrading.

"Charles is my husband. I love him, and he does not ravish me Elsa stated. There is no other and there never will be" she added.

I believe that, given enough time, you can be persuaded to be my mate, Adam confidently replied.

Believe anything you want. It will never happen, Anna retorted.

Up until now, Elsa hadn’t moved a muscle except to talk, but her eyes were constantly scanning the road and the surrounding area, trying desperately to recognize anything at all, but to no avail. She had no idea where they were.

Just when hope seemed lost, she remembered that her cell phone was in her jacket pocket. If she could just hit the emergency call button, maybe the police would stop the car and she could make her escape. Remembering that Adam could get inside her head, she quickly tried to think of other things in order to throw him off of her thoughts. She didn’t want Adam to be able to pick up on it.

I have to pee, she thought to herself. I have to pee, bad. I wish Adam would stop somewhere so I could pee. I really need to go bad. She ran this thought over and over in her mind, hoping he would pick up on it. Oh, boy, I really gotta pee. I guess I’m gonna have to ask him to stop. I hate to because it’s embarrassing, but if I don’t get somewhere soon, I’m gonna pee my pants.

Do you need to stop and use the bathroom? Adam finally asked.

Oh, yes, Elsa said eagerly. I really need to go. Is there a place nearby?

I know of a petrol station not much farther ahead. We will stop there.

Elsa had noticed the increase in traffic and signs of civilization. They must be approaching a town.

Thank you, she said, with a sigh of relief. She really did have to go, but it would also give her a chance to try to signal for help. She had heard that even if she couldn’t talk to the emergency operator, that they would be able to track the call to the source.

In just a few minutes, Adam slowed the car and pulled in to a large truck stop.

The loo is inside, he told her. I will go in and wait outside the door for you. You can’t get away, so don’t bother to try.

    I won’t, she agreed.

They walked through the convenience store to the restroom area. True to his word, Adam stationed himself right outside the women’s restroom door. Elsa didn’t care as long as she could be alone for a few moments to place the call. She couldn’t talk much since Adam’s enhanced hearing would pick up her side of the conversation.

Just as the emergency operator answered, Elsa flushed the toilet. She hoped that would make enough noise to drown out anything that was said. Knowing that her time was running out, all Elsa managed to say was Help. She put the phone on silence so the operator’s voice couldn’t be heard. She flushed the toilet again and quietly stated the
