Blogger's Quick Guide to Starting Your First WordPress Blog - Rebecca Livermore

    Introduction

If you have a business, you need a blog. Now I know that not everyone agrees with that, but let me explain to you why I believe that’s true.

As a business owner, you need to have a website. The good news is, you can build an entire website on WordPress, so this book will help you with that as well.

But websites without blogs are referred to as static, and static websites are not only boring, they are also less effective.

The reason is that websites that look like nothing more than a glorified brochure seldom convince anyone to do business with you. They do very little to set you apart from anyone else. Unless people already know you from somewhere else, you’ll be unlikely to sell anything to anyone if your website is static.

In contrast, a website that includes a blog component to it is living and breathing. When used properly, it’s updated frequently, so it always has fresh content, something new, that will bring people back time and time again.

The best thing about this is that all of the content that you create on your blog will accomplish a lot of things. Here are just a few of them:

Help You to Be Found in Search

Let’s face it; you’re not going to make any money if people don’t even know that your business exists! And while you can let people know about your business in various ways, one of the best ways for people to learn about your business is through Google and other searches.

And you never know where being found through Google may lead! For instance, I recently gained a new client who found me from doing a Google search for content creation. Had I not blogged about content creation, and simply had a static website, he never would have found me. I anticipate making a minimum of $45,000 from that one client, most likely a lot more over time. And that’s not the only time I’ve gained clients through my blog.

Help Establish Yourself as an Expert

One of the great things about blogging is that it gives you an opportunity to show off what you know. For example, with the client that I mentioned above who found me via a Google search, finding me was just the first step. Once he found me, my blog helped to validate my expertise since I give away a lot of free information about content creation on my blog.

I’ve had a lot of other people reach out to me for assistance with things like Kindle publishing, blog reviews, and other topics that I blog about. For example, I’ve had someone who found my blog by doing a Google search about publishing a Kindle book hire me to format, edit and coach him on Kindle publishing. My blog posts made it clear to him that I have a high level of knowledge about Kindle publishing, so the natural thing was for him to reach out to me to tap into my expertise – and to pay me for that expertise.

The more you use your blog to share your knowledge with the world, the more people will begin to see you as an expert in your niche.

    Helps You Build Rapport

When you have a strong online presence, and you freely share your knowledge with people on a regular basis, they get to know, like and trust you. Not only will they trust your expertise if you’ve established yourself as an expert as mentioned in the previous point; they’ll also get to like you – or not. When you blog, you create content that shows off your personality and perspective.

If you really let your personality shine, some people will be drawn to who you are, and frankly, others won’t. The great thing about this is that you WANT to repel people who don’t like who you are because they wouldn’t be good customers or clients for you anyway. But attracting people who resonate with your way of doing things, and building trust with them is a great way to grow a thriving business. Blogging helps build trust, particularly when you publish blog posts consistently.

    Saves You Time

One of the big elephants in the room is the amount of time it takes to blog. And I’m not going to lie; blogging does take time. But it can also save you a lot of time, particularly if you regularly have people asking you questions.

For example, I frequently have people ask me questions related to blogging, Kindle publishing, and other content-related topics. In the beginning, I’d spend a lot of time writing out long, detailed answers to their questions. While it was great to help people, who has time to do that on top of running a business – especially if you’re answering those questions for free?

The great thing about having a blog is that when people ask you a question, if you’ve already addressed that issue on your blog, you can simply send them a link to any blog posts you’ve already written. If you haven’t addressed their question in
