The Dragon's Secret: Book 1 of The Dragon's Breath Series

About this ebook
The Dragon’s Breath Trilogy is an action packed adventure series that I wrote for my three children. Its central theme focuses on the impact of divorce on children’s lives and how they cope with the emotional turmoil, transitions, trials and tribulations of living between two houses with separated parents and the introduction of extended families and other parental partners.
Each story has a central theme and a challenge that each child has to meet. They each have to overcome their fears and insecurities while they also deal with the impact of their parents’ separation. There to help them, in each case, is their Dragon – the voice of reason, a symbol of the energy of life that burns within them. The Dragon’s message to each of the three children is slightly different because they were each affected differently by their parents’ relationship breakdown.
The books are written to pass on advice to the reader, suggest skills and strategies to assist with a broader understanding and acceptance of what may have also affected them in their lives and, above all, to give reason for hope in going forward.

Chapter One
Ella’s Challenge
Now Ella!
Dips squealed, flapping her wings faster and faster. It’s time for us to fly, hover and float.
Dips, the dragon within Ella, fluffed up her pink tutu and brushed away the gobs of make-up splattered upon her snout and all over her golden scales. With eyes all a-sparkle and full of wonder she swished her tail from side to side. A red mist appeared and, from within the vapour, sparks ignited until the air was alive with burning embers and flames. The heat, the energy of life, rushed to Ella’s cheeks, giving them a pink glow.
Dips yelled, Let’s soar like a bird. Taste the clouds and feel their softness upon our lips.
The high jump was the last event on the interschool sports day for primary school girls in the Bayside region. Around the edges of the athletics track, banners and flags with different school pendants flapped and waved in the wind. Some of the girls had their faces painted with their school colours.
In the stands there was a thunder of shoes stomping upon the floorboards and hands clapping. Above the yells and screams, the girls from Ella’s primary school – Star of the Sea College – the Star Girls as they called themselves, started to chant Ella’s name: Ella … Ella … Ella.
Louder and louder the chant rose until the running track was alive with noise.
Why me, Miss?
Ella asked, in panic. Ella took a deep breath. Her heart pounded so hard it made music in her chest.
What if she failed? Everyone would see her.
Why-bother-Ella?
was what some of the girls called her. The high jump bar was above her head now. "I didn’t want
