Arise - Rosalind Duke
Abe’s Thoughts
1996
The sky is very bright
Tonight,
With stars,
Nestling in the deep dark blue.
The chill,
With creeping
Fingers,
Is gnawing at my ancient bones.
I wonder if I am alone
With thoughts
Just such as mine,
Or if someone
Has thought before,
A plan,
A promise
That’s divine.
I sense the stars
Are speaking now,
Like individuals as yet unborn,
But still are watching
As I trudge
My weary way;
A myriad
Strewn
Across the sky
By some unseen hand.
I will plod onward
To my new home,
To my long
Promised
Land.
Advent
1996
The candle from the altar flame
Was lit.
From the light on the table
Of sacrifice
We remember His death.
Light comes
Out of darkness,
Bright,
Transforming,
Changing
Our lives.
Now.
Another Communion
2013
The flash of light
Touches the cup
As I drink
From the blood of Christ.
May Your light
Keep my heart
In peace,
Your peace,
That passes all understanding,
And may the bread
Of Your Covenant,
Bind me to You.
Amen.
Arms
1997
When you struggle
At every turn
And fight to hold your head up
Above the flood
That rages round,
Hold on, hold on.
When you fight for life
On every side,
And no one is there for you,
Stand,
And remain standing.
Do not fall.
Hold on, hold on with your hand.
For He is there
At every turn,
Holding you with His hand.
He will not let you sink.
He will not let you fall,
For He surrounds you
In the shelter of His arms.
At the End of the Day
1996
At the end of the day,
There may be nothing left
Of me,
But the essence of me,
All else gone,
Destroyed
By the onslaughts
Of evil and hate,
The unquenchable
Anger,
And the bitterness of wrath.
At the end of the day
There may be nothing left,
Except,
Like a glistening orb,
A teardrop
On the face
Of God.
You may say,
What was her life worth?
Did she achieve anything?
What did she gain?
But I tell you this my friend,
No one
Can take away
What has been burnished in me
Through pain.
It has been God
Who is holding me here.
God, who is holding me
With His hand.
Holding me
In my affliction,
In this deep pit
Of pain.
Only He knows the answer.
Only He knows why?
But I know that
He is holding me,
In His arm,
In His hand,
In His care.
God can’t
Always give us an answer,
Or the reason why.
But I tell you this
My friend,
He can look in my eyes
And say
‘I’ve been there.’
So I’m not alone
In this pit of despair,
Although to the world
Outside
It
