About this ebook

Eric Barton, a village boy for all of his life, was born in Nayland, Suffolk and remained by the picturesque River Stour for 30 years. After marrying, he and his wife June moved over the county border into the beautiful village of Great Horkesley in Essex. Inspired by his life’s surroundings, Eric spent many evenings telling interesting and friendly countryside wildlife stories to his two sons and more recently his seven grandchildren. This was always a great way to relax them and encourage those tired eyes to shut.
With the arrival of Isla Daisy King, the author’s first great grandchild, it was time to put those imaginative wildlife stories into print.

    Peggy Rabbit forgets

Janet and Buck rabbit lived in a burrow in the hedge, which surrounded an apple orchard. They had to be very careful as many people took their dogs for a run around the orchard and very few were on a lead. Being spring time, the grass and most plants which they liked to eat were growing so they didn't have to go very far for something to eat. But keeping a look out at the same time as having a feed didn't make life very easy.

Buck was very pleased with himself as Janet had told him that he was going to be a Daddy, so to celebrate, he took a lovely big leaf of cow mumble home for Janet. Whilst chewing away and enjoying the leaf, Buck said What should we call them? I think Jerry for a boy and Jill for a girl

No said Janet, I would like Peggy and Percy, after a bit of thinking. I know what we will do said Buck You can name the boy and I'll name it if it's a girl

Two mornings later, Buck went out for his normal jog around as was having a little chat with his friend, who was nicknamed Thunder, as he was always making a lot of noise, telling him about becoming a Dad. Thunder said That's nice to which Buck replied, Yes it is, and that means you will have to be quiet around the burrow. And it wasn't too soon for Buck arrived back home and there was Janet with the tiny babies all still with their eyes closed but moving their legs around.

Wasn't Buck pleased, he carefully gave each one a gentle rub with his nose and then sliding up to Janet, he tickled her face with his whiskers and said You are clever.

As the days passed by, Buck soon found he had another job when the babies wanted to go outside and play. This meant Dad had to be on the look out and give the warning of any danger to which the young ones had to dash into their burrow. Mum rabbit having had three babies, one boy and two girls. What do you think their names were? Why of course, Peggy and Jill for the girls and Percy for the boy.

Soon the young ones were able to look after themselves. But one day, Peggy was having so much fun she forgot and had to run like mad as a snapping dog had got in the way of getting back to the burrow. Having no idea where she was, Peggy ran and ran not knowing where she was going. Soon she was out of breath and
