Even a flood starts with a drop. Although women made up the majority of the workforce and relegated men to homemakers in many households the customs and fashion still hadn’t been impacted. Men still wore pants while women wore sarees although younger women wore women’s pants and t-shirts.

All religious rituals were practiced as was done since ages. Many young women started questioning them but nothing seemed to be done regarding changing that. Although many young boys were spotted wearing dupatta pants, palazzo shorts/pants with crop tops but by and large the fashion scenario remained untouched.

At this time a simple middle class wedding grab eyeballs and started a revolution. This happened before the government had pushed in the name change law. The wedding was of Savitri and Abhishek.

Abhishek was the middle child of Sumitra, a widow and bank employee. Abhishek had an elder sister Ananya who was doing her final year MBBS (medicine) while his younger sister Anusha had come within the top 10 in the 10th std state rankings. 21 year old Abhishek on the other hand had completed his B.Sc degree and remained jobless.

Sumitra was always worried about her son as he had no future plans and seemed to live life aimlessly while her daughters seemed more focussed and had dreams to achieve. This seemed the trend across the country and world for that matter.

As Sumitra wondered how she can get her son to become responsible Aarthi came into their lives like a saviour. Aarthi was the 25 year old daughter of Sumitra’s childhood friend Saraswati and her husband Anand Rao. Saraswati was a housewife while Anand Rao was a social activist lawyer.

Once when Sumitra had gone to a temple she accidentally met Saraswati and they hit it off once again as they were happy to see each other after years.

Aarthi was the polar opposite of Abhishek. She was a focussed young woman who had just fulfilled her dream by becoming an IPS Officer.

As Sumitra and Saraswati went to each other’s house they saw Aarthi and Abhishek both the women felt they would make a nice pair. When Abhishek was shown a picture of Aarthi he was awestruck by her beauty. She looked gorgeous in a silk saree. He immediately gave his acceptance to marry her and didn’t even bother asking what does does or what she has studied.

But when Aarthi saw Abhishek’s picture she felt he looked good but told her mother that she will only take a call after she speaks to Abhishek in person.

The following weekend Abhishek and Aarthi met in a restaurant. Aarthi looked chic and cool on a blue jeans and green cotton kurti.

Everything went wrong during the meeting. Abhishek turned up an hour late than he was supposed to be. Aarthi was pissed off with his attitude. She hated how he had no ambitions and didn’t know what to do in life. Abhishek too was surprised when he learnt that Aarthi was an IPS officer which intimidated him a bit and also made him feel insecure.

Abhishek asked her to quit her job post marriage shocking her out of her wits.

But why? she asked in surprise.

Because I want my wife to be a housewife he answered making her furious. She was at loss of words at how a freeloader like Abhishek could want a stay at home wife.

They both had a showdown and left from there hating each other. Their mothers were disappointed but they respected their children’s opinions and didn’t push the matter forward.

Three months later..................

Aarthi led an operation and successfully busted a drug dealer and during that time Abhishek was caught red-handed. Later when he was taken to the station Aarthi saw him and was surprised. Abhishek was embarrassed to be seen in such a situation.

In the past 3 months Aarthi was in a dilemma over Abhishek. She knew that her mother and Sumitra were disappointed over her marriage with Abhishek. But she was helpless as Abhishek was such a dinosaur. Aarthi had also joined BKB and was undergoing a slow mental transformation. Since she was in the police she could see firsthand how the crimes against women had increased over the years mainly due to women being more capable than men. Men in a sense of insecurity tried to impose their strength on women to prove their superiority.

When Aarthi learnt that Abhishek was into drugs she was furious for not only was Abhishek a lazy bum but also spent his mother’s hard earned money on drugs. Abhishek pleaded her to spare him for once. A plan formed in Aarthi’s mind wherein she would marry Abhishek either by mending him or bending him.

OK, I shall help you, but what will I get in return? Aarthi asked him pointedly.

How much do you want? asked Abhishek thinking she was expecting money to be let free but it made Aarthi laugh.

The question should be what do I want not how much do I want Aarthi corrected him with a smile.

What do you want? Abhishek asked her.

I want to marry you said Aarthi taking him by surprise.

Why? asked Abhishek.

Why should I not? Our parents would like us to get married. I think we both make a good pair and most importantly by large you are not too bad a person said Aarthi making Abhishek blush a bit.

But the only thing is that................. she stopped for a moment as Abhishek listened intently.

You want me to quit my job and be a housewife which is a complete no no to me said Aarthi as Abhishek listened in silence.

But I have a solution for that said Aarthi leaning back on her chair.

What is it? asked Abhishek curiously.

Let’s get engaged. After that you will have 3 months time by which you need to find a job that will provide you enough to suffice the needs of both of us. If you can manage that I shall resign from my job and become a housewife by looking after you and our future children said Aarthi as Abhishek let out a sigh of relief. He was happy that Aarthi had agreed to marry him and be a housewife. He had regretted over missing such a beautiful woman but now he found a way to get her back.

On the other hand if you fail to find a job in the next three months then we will both marry but since you would have failed to be a provider you will become my wife Aarthi completed her proposal looking for his reaction.

What do you mean I will become your wife? he asked a bit confused.

"I meant exactly what I said. As a husband you will need to earn the bread so that I can cook it to serve our family. But if you fail to do that then I will be forced to earn the bread so that means you will need to cook it. So if you fail to get a job I will be the bread winner and you will be the housewife.

Are you kidding? Why will I stay at home and keep the house? You can stuff your crappy solution up your ass Abhishek shouted angrily.

Fine, it’s up to you. In that case you will be locked up immediately in the drugs case and a FIR registered against you Aarthi replied coolly.

Abhishek seemed to mellow down on hearing about being arrested. He tried to reason with her but Aarthi didn’t budge.
