Chapter 1
The full moon lit the grassy knoll in an eerie pale glow. A single figure laid waiting, his black bodysuit absorbing the moisture from the recent rain. Aside from the chatter of crickets, the only sound he could hear was his own breathing. Cradled in his arms he held a flat-black high powered rifle, its finish would mask any reflection of moonlight on the weapon.
While watching the large house at the bottom of the hill, he screwed a silencer noiselessly into the barrel of the weapon, noting that he still had five minutes before his target arrived home. The computerized sniper scope slid into place just behind the stubby metal gun-sight.
Turning his attention back to the house, he couldn't help but be impressed. It had to have cost at least five or six million – it was a shame that it would soon be vacant. Using the electronic sights of the sniper scope, he looked into a lit window on the ground floor where a young woman was playing with two small children. They belonged to his target; an ambitious congressman from a wealthy political family who seemed destined for greatness. The reason for his elimination was simple - the congressman was about to legislate his employer out of business. It was unfortunate that it was always the righteous that had to die.
Reaching into the pocket of his black bodysuit, he withdrew three hollow-point bullets and loaded them into the rifle. He liked the hollow-points because a hit to the body almost guaranteed a kill - rarely did he need more than one. Finally satisfied that the cartridges had been loaded properly, he chambered a round and waited. Explosives would have been the safer play, but only the congressman would die tonight. It was the only concession he’d made to his professional life. Despite the protests from potential employers, he would not willfully take the life of a child.
It wasn't a long before a black limo pulled up to the front of the house. Perfect, the assassin thought, right on schedule - he appreciated it when the target was punctual. Lying on his stomach with the butt of the rifle against his shoulder, he gingerly stroked the trigger with his right hand while adjusting the sights of the high-tech scope with his left. The scope had numerous settings depending on the situation, but tonight it was set on infrared, projecting everything to his eye in a dull red glow.
Magnifying the image, he quickly zoomed in on the face of the handsome politician. Satisfied that the target had been acquired, he activated the laser sight sending an invisible beam of light that marked a spot on his forehead with a red dot only visible to the scope. Without hesitation, he pulled the trigger twice in rapid succession. Silenced as it was, the rifle popped twice, sending the metal slugs along the beam of the laser to their target.
Watching through the scope, he was amazed to see his shots had missed, instead shattering the window behind the target in a spray of glass. He replayed the scene again through the scope's recorder, noting that the hollow-points didn’t miss - they had seemingly passed through the man’s head like miniature phantoms.
He rubbed his eyes and looked again as the congressman stared up at him with a smile that mocked the attempt. The assassin, confused but determined, sighted in the laser scope for another shot, but his target had vanished.
Surprise,
a voice said from behind him.
The assassin quickly turned and brought up rifle. He saw the young congressman standing before
