CHAPTER 1
Iwoke up at first light.
My plan of action was to leave Lorna Linda and take I-8 North towards San Diego. That was where my mother was waiting, and I had already been away from home for far too long.
Showering fast and opting for a cup of instant coffee, I was startled by a knock on my screen door. The mug nearly fell from my hand and splattered to the tile floor when I saw Tommy waving through the mesh with a bright smile on his face.
I’ve never seen you out and about this early,
I teased as I ushered him inside. Or did you just not get to bed yet?
Lean towards column B,
he said. Kevin does more than bust out those signature dance moves when you get him on his own.
My eyes nearly rolled back in my head when the light from his smile wouldn’t let me rip him out of the clouds.
So you finally did the deed,
I said. And yet you left all that hunky goodness to visit me.
That’s what friends are for,
he said as he planted a soft kiss on my cheek. Any more word about your mom?
Same as it’s been,
I said. And friend that he was, he let the matter drop even as he made a face at the prospect of his own cup of instant coffee.
Christ, girl,
he said. It’s not like you don’t have a Keurig. For crying out loud, use it.
The smell of Colombian roast filled the air, and it seemed like the superior pick-me-up as I thanked him with a gentle nod and padded back to my bedroom. My bags were packed and ready to go. It was nothing to undress in front of him, and Tommy flopped on the edge of the bed as he watched me push into a sky blue skirt and a cream-colored blouse.
Sure that’s the best idea for travelling togs?
he asked. Why not just stay in your PJs and call it a morning?
My mother always said that a lady should always dress for a trip like anyone might cross her path,
I said.
And who are you expecting?
he challenged. Cop that you might have to charm out of writing a ticket? Or some tall dark stranger?
Like I had time for either brand. But when my mother saw me, she would smile and know I still kept her lessons close to my heart.
You’re going to take notes for me, right?
I asked. Last thing I need is to fall behind.
Please,
he huffed as he grabbed one of my pillows and carelessly tossed it into the air so he could catch it just as quickly. You could teach the fucking class by now. Take the rest of the semester off and still come out on top.
That was sweet of him to say, but I still paused before the mirror and sadly looked at my reflection staring back at me. Where were all those smarts when it came to making my mother whole again? In so many ways it felt like a childish fantasy, but I wanted to locate a magic bullet and find the way to stop the cancer from eating away at her body. How many nights had I made a deal with God in the dark? Save my mother’s life. And I’d devote the rest of my life to making every other person under the sun well. Wasn’t that more than a fair trade?
Johanna?
I barely felt Tommy slip to my side when he stared at me in the space of the mirror, and I turned back into his strong arms to sob softly against his chest.
Why does it already feel like I’m heading to a funeral?
I cried. I’m going to be an orphan, Tommy. And it just hurts so fucking much. I...I can’t...
My voice trailed off, and he kept me close as he rubbed one hand down my back and patted my hair. I get it,
he said. But you’re going to get there in time. I know you will.
The chimes from my phone pulled me away from him, and I dove for my purse to scoop it up as the contact info for Cedar Pines came into view.
Oh my God,
I muttered. I...I’m already too late. I can’t...what do I even say?
He clasped my shoulders and urged me to answer as I pressed the phone to my ear with a trembling hand.
Hello?
I said. Yes. Yes this is Mrs. Emerald’s daughter.
Locking eyes with Tommy, I held my breath, my teeth ready to draw blood from my lips as I softly nodded my head and finally exhaled. He took my sagging body back into his arms and kissed the top of my head as I blinked back a few tears and released a sigh.
I’m still on my way,
I promised. She’s...so she is doing better?
The words from the real live nurse from the other end of the phone sounded optimistic yet cautious. Part of the gig. Yet time still seemed of the essence as I got a rundown of her vitals and clutched Tommy’s hand.
I’ll be there before the day is out,
I promised. Just...can you please keep her comfortable until I arrive?
Sitting up straighter as the catty voice from the other end of the phone reminded me that that was her job, I smirked at Tommy and ended the call with a
