    Calum’s Rescue

Beatrice York, the Viceroy of Scotland—and lands to the north—followed the giant known as Whale down the gangplank and onto Edinburgh docks.

The docks were a death trap for the unwary, with stores being swung on and off ships and wagons and carriages jostling for every inch of space, while a throng of arriving and departing passengers were accosted on every side by sellers of anything a person could desire.

Beatrice stopped at the edge of the dock and looked around. There was supposed to be a coach and drivers to meet her and escort her to the castle, but they were nowhere in sight. Words would be spoken and heads would roll. She wished she had the authority to actually behead a few ranking government officials to send a strong signal, but she didn’t. Yet.

Whale put down the two trunks he’d been carrying and looked back at his new mistress. She was being jostled by three men with baskets of fish, bread, and something in a bottle. The overdressed fat man started to protest, but a hand the size of a shovel caught his silk coat and threw him out onto the baskets and kegs lining the docks.

Whale held the carriage door open and waited for Beatrice to get inside. Where will you be going, miss?

The castle, Beatrice said, lifted a chewed chicken leg between her thumb and finger and tossed it out.

You, Whale said, looking up at the driver. Take the lady to the castle. He closed the carriage door. And don’t hit no bumps.

The driver looked at the fat man trying to haul himself to his feet among the stores, then back at Whale. And started the team moving very slowly, while Whale looked around for a wagon to take the viceroy’s baggage. There were plenty to choose from
